4 August 2008: In an address to the Joint Session of the
Mexican Senate and Chamber of Deputies, UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon,
noted their pivotal role in bridging the local and global, highlighting the
three inter-related challenges faced by the world today, namely, a climate
crisis, a food crisis, and an emerging development emergency.
1 August 2008: UN Secretary-General wore a casual outfit to kick off the “Cool UN” scheme, which seeks to curb the organization's greenhouse gas emissions, limit the use of air conditioning and save money for the UN. The UN Economic Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) premises in Bangkok, Thailand, which houses over a dozen of the Organization's entities, also joined the “Cool UN” scheme.
1 August 2008: The United Nations plans to decrease its
carbon footprint for the month of August by increasing the temperature in its
New York Headquarters and eliminating air conditioning on the weekends. The
initiative will result in an emissions decrease of the equivalent of 300 pounds
of carbon dioxide and, if the trial period is successful and the initiative is
extended, could save the UN roughly US$1 million annually.
29 July 2008: In a message to the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned
Movement in Tehran, Iran, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged a successful
conclusion to climate talks in Copenhagen in 2009, noting that progress towards
the Millennium Development Goals and ensuring food security have been severely
undermined by the climate crisis.
July 2008. The UN Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has launched, in collaboration with
the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) Secretariat, a
document for the implementation of Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) Priority Five
(disaster preparedness for effective response at all levels).
10 July 2008: In the North-East Gallery of the UN Visitors'
Lobby, an exhibit entitled “The Amazon Forest & Climate Change” opened on
10 July 2008, and will be on display until 6 August 2008.

July 2008: In a series of statements and articles over the past two weeks, UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has emphasized the linkages between the food
crisis, climate change and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs).

my thoughts through the inaugural edition of this bulletin – which I
hope will become a vibrant medium of communication and exchange in the
period ahead – as we each do our part to keep the promise we made in
Bali and to realize success in Poznań and then Copenhagen.
