8 November 2008: The high-level conference on “Climate
Change: Technology Development and Technology Transfer,” which took place in
Beijing, China, from 7-8 November 2008, was co-hosted by the UN Department of
Economic and Social Affairs, and supported by the UN Foundation.
2 November 2008: In a press conference given in Dhaka,
Bangladesh, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated that the financial crisis
should not “impede our efforts to fight climate change.” He described the
possible impacts of global warming on Bangladeshis, and noted the country's
efforts in disaster prevention and preparedness.
31 October 2008: At the Conference for Women Leaders,
co-sponsored by the Republic of Korea's Ministry of Gender Equality and the UN
World Tourism Organization ST-EP (Sustainable Tourism for Eliminating Poverty)
Foundation, held on 31 October 2008, in Seoul, Republic of Korea, UN Deputy Secretary-General
Asha Rose Migiro highlighted the burden of climate change on women and the need
to work towards gender equality, including in decision-making.
30 October 2008: In a lecture delivered at the Rajiv Gandhi
Foundation in New Delhi, India, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined
that the financial crisis should not “become an excuse for deferring or backing
away from our fight against climate change.”
30 October 2008: Speaking at the World Leaders Forum on
International Cooperation for Green Growth taking place on 30 October 2008, in
Seoul, Republic of Korea, UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro noted
that many of the current challenges are due to unsustainable development paths,
and highlighted the interlinkages among the food, energy and financial crises,
as well as global warming.
30 October 2008: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon held a
meeting in New Delhi, India, with leading Indian business leaders and Rajendra
Pachauri, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Director-
General of TERI, to discuss the corporate initiatives undertaken by the TERI
Business Council to reduce the impact of climate change.
29 October 2008: In a speech delivered at the University of
Philippines, in Manila, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon indicated that his
“most immediate concern” was that the financial crisis could “eclipse the
global effort to address climate change.” He noted that, while developing
countries face the same pressures as the US and Europe, they lack the resources
to tackle the crisis.
28 October 2008: In a video message to the tenth meeting of
the Conference of the Contracting Parties of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands,
taking place in Changwon, Republic of Korea, from 28 October-4 November 2008,
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the appropriateness of the
conference's theme, “Healthy wetlands, healthy people.”
27 October 2008: In a speech delivered on 24 October 2008,
in New York, US, at the concert for UN Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
welcomed Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, who were performing, as well as
the Heads of UN agencies and programmes who had gathered for the biannual
meeting of the UN System Chief Executives Board.
23 October 2008: The UN has issued an international postage
stamp set and informational booklet about global warming, exclusively using
photographs from Gary Braasch's book “Earth Under Fire: How Global Warming is
Changing the World.” The publication is part of the UN's “Year of Planet Earth”
environmental focus.
