UNESCO Co-organizes Conference on Oceans and Climate Change [viewed]

3 September 2010:  The International Ocean Institute (IOI), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the State Oceanic Administration of the People's Republic of China co-organized the Pacem in Maribus XXXIII International Conference on Oceans, which took place from 2-4 September 2010, in Beijing, China, under the theme "Oceans, Climate Change and Sustainable Development: Challenges to Oceans and Coastal Cities."

Event: UNCTAD Ad Hoc Expert Meeting on the Green Economy: Trade and Sustainable Development Implications [viewed]

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is organizing an expert meeting to feed into the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), to be held in Brazil in 2012. The Ad Hoc Expert Meeting is being organized in close collaboration with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). It aims to explore ways in which the green economy, through trade-led growth, could become a pro-development income-generating instrument that will directly contribute to meeting the sustainable development imperative adopted at Rio in 1992.

Event: 2010 Social Forum on Climate Change and Human Rights [viewed]

The Office of the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR) will host the 2010 Social Forum on Climate Change and Human Rights, which will address: the adverse effects of climate change on the full enjoyment of human rights, including the right to life and economic, social and cultural rights; measures and actions to address the impact of climate change on the full enjoyment of human rights at the local, national, regional and international levels, including on most vulnerable groups, particularly women and children; and international assistance and cooperation in addressing the human rights related impact of climate change. The Forum is aimed to provide a dialogue avenue for NGOs to communicate with Human Rights Council (HRC) member States. The participants will include HRC member States, NGOs, UN agencies and academia representatives.

July-August 2010 Issue of UNCCD News Focuses on Decade for Deserts [viewed]

16 August 2010: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has released the July-August 2010 issue of UNCCD News, which focuses on the launch of the UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification (UNDDD). This special issue contains statements from 15 leaders, pledging their commitment and the backing of their organizations to the Decade.

Event: Second Intersessional Meeting for UNCSD [viewed]

The first meeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom I) of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) called for three intersessional meetings to be convened ahead of the June 2012 event. Intersessional II will take place on 15-16 December 2011. The Organization of Work, preliminary programme of side events, and Guidance Note from the Bureau are available on the meeting webpage.
