Human Rights Council Expresses Concern over Housing, Refugee Policy [viewed]

OHCHR24 March 2016: The 31st session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) concluded in Geneva, Switzerland, with UN representatives and advisors expressing concern over the arbitrary detention of refugees and migrants to Europe, the homelessness crisis worldwide, and the impacts of inequality on human rights. Panel discussions during the three-week session addressed ways to mainstream human rights in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and closer cooperation with climate actors on the right to health, among other issues.

UN Secretary-General Calls for "One Set" of Principles to Support 2030 Agenda [viewed]

un_cebJanuary 2016: The UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) endorsed a strategy for the global initiative on decent jobs for youth, as well as a position paper on equality and non-discrimination, at the CEB's second regular session of 2015. Also at that meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon requested the Board's high-level committees to work together to produce “one set” of principles, to guide the UN system's support to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an integrated way.

CSW 60 Opens with Calls for Gender Equality to Guide Action on SDGs [viewed]

csw6014 March 2016: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a framework for action to transform gender relations and achieve gender equality and women's empowerment, making the world a better place for all, UN leaders said at the opening session of the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). CSW 60 is expected to discuss implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and take stock of progress in eliminating violence against women and girls.

UN Special Rapporteur Highlights Climate Change Impacts on Human Rights [viewed]

united_nations_human_rights4 March 2016: A global temperature increase of one or two degrees Celsius would adversely affect human rights, including the rights to life, development, food, water, health and housing, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, John Knox, told the Human Rights Council (HRC). Knox stressed that human rights obligations with respect to climate change include decisions about how much climate protection to pursue, as well as the mitigation and adaptation measures through which protection is achieved.

CEDAW, Canada Highlight Centrality of Women and Girls to DRR [viewed]

ohchr-canada1 March 2016: Women and girls must be at the core of disaster risk reduction (DRR), given that they often “bear the brunt” of climate change and hazards, said participants during a special session on gender-related dimensions of disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change, convened by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The half-day session discussed DRR and climate change in the context of provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

Business Highlights Opportunities, Challenges Posed by SDGs [viewed]

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)February 2016: The private sector is identifying opportunities to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to recent publications and blogs. Business groups and other researchers have highlighted sustainability trends that will affect the private sector, addressing key areas for corporate leadership in implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change; the role of the mobile communications industry; concerns about the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism's (TFM) engagement with business; infrastructure financing; and a campaign to identify ‘SDG Pioneers.'

Changes in UN High-Level Leadership Announced [viewed]

United Nations19 February 2016: Several high-level leadership positions related to intergovernmental sustainable development policy will be filled in the coming months. Within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process, there will be changes in the following positions: UNFCCC Executive Secretary; President of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC; and the Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). In addition, the selection processes for the next Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the next UN Secretary-General are underway.

AU Assembly Addresses Human Rights, 2030 Agenda, Illegal Trade in Wildlife [viewed]
