According to the report, would be possible to provide universal access to modern energy services by 2030 without significantly increasing greenhouse gas emissions, by scaling up renewable energy and other low-emission technologies.

UNESCO's “Climate Frontlines” Forum Discusses the Impact of Frozen Pastures on Herding Communities [viewed]

26 April 2010: The latest issue of “Climate Frontlines,” a global forum on the internet for indigenous peoples, small islands and vulnerable communities sponsored by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Secretariat of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), features an article on the growing role of climate change in accelerating desertification and accentuating winter conditions for herding communities.

UNPFII Considers Reports on Climate Change Policies [viewed]

26 April 2010: The Ninth Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is taking place in New York, US, from 19-30 April 2010, around the theme “Development with Culture and Identity.” In his opening statement, Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, underlined that indigenous cultures, languages and ways of life are under constant threat from climate change, armed conflict, lack of educational opportunities and discrimination.

UN Humanitarian Chief and WFP Focus on West African Food Crisis [viewed]

26 April 2010: UN World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Josette Sheeran has indicated that the intense droughts in Niger are escalating the humanitarian crisis and contributing to mass migration from rural to urban areas as well as to neighboring countries. She has announced that WFP will step up its aid to support 2.3 million people, particularly pregnant women and children, in the arid eastern Sahel region.

Mother Earth is Under Pressure - UN Secretary-General [viewed]

22 April 2010:  In a message to mark International Mother Earth Day, celebrated on 22 April, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated that "Mother Earth – our only home – is under pressure."  Noting that we have "drawn on nature's capital without putting back," he underlined that we are now seeing the consequences, as showcased by climate change and the depleted ozone layer.
