Event: Sustainable Stock Exchanges Regional Dialogue Southeast Asia [viewed]

The Stock Exchange of Thailand, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Global Compact and Principles for Responsible Investment (PRAI), with support from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Climate Disclosure Standards Board and other sponsors are hosting the dialogue. CEOs of stock exchanges, institutional investors, regulators and other policy makers will discuss challenges and opportunities to promote sustainable development through capital markets, including ways to promote the environmental, social and governance performance of listed companies. A high-level policy dialogue will take place in the morning, and workshops on sustainability reporting, climate disclosure standards and investor risk management in relation to water scarcity, land use and other natural resource management issues will run in parallel in the afternoon. The event is part of the Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative (SSEI), led by UNEP, UNCTAD, PRAI and the UN Global Compact.

Scientific Advisory Board Highlights Science, Technology and Innovation as MOI [viewed]

United Nations29 April 2015: Members of the UN Secretary-General's Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) called for improving the interface between science and policy in order to develop and implement solutions to global challenges. The call was made at a roundtable with UN Member States on means of implementation (MOI) and the post-2015 development agenda. The Board also underscored the importance of science in facilitating transformations toward local low-carbon economies and sustainable urbanization.

UN Launches ‘Data for Climate Action' Initiative [viewed]

data_for_climate_action22 April 2015: To strengthen climate change resilience, the UN Secretary-General's Climate Change Support Team (CCST) and UN Global Pulse are launching an open innovation challenge to demonstrate novel ways of understanding the impacts of climate change. The challenge encourages private sector companies worldwide to share large, anonymized datasets related to company operations, supply chains or consumer behavior, which can be used to spur innovation in adaptation.

UN Deputy Secretary-General: Sustainable Energy Central to Post-2015 Development Agenda [viewed]

SE4ALL16 April 2015: During a briefing delivered to UN Member States, UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson stressed the critical role energy must play in a new global development agenda. Speaking about the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative, Eliasson illustrated the interconnectedness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the three goals of SE4ALL.

Event: Mind the Science: Why Businesses Are Aligning Their Goals with the Planet [viewed]

As part of Climate Week Paris 2015, the partners of the Science Based Targets initiative are organizing this event to present the Sectoral Decarbonization Approach methodology that they developed for corporations to set greenhouse gas (GHG) targets aligned with climate science and the goal of keeping average global temperature rise at or below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. Speakers from Science Based Targets will present their report, titled 'Mind the Science,' and corporate leaders will speak about their experience with applying science-based targets. The partners of the Science Based Targets initiative are CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

ECOSOC Begins Meeting with BWIs on Post-2015, FfD [viewed]

ECOSOC20 April 2015: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) began its annual special high-level meeting with the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), with a focus on the theme of ‘Coherence, coordination and cooperation in the context of financing for sustainable development and the post-2015 development agenda.' The meeting brought representatives of the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs) together with UN Member States to discuss post-2015 development and the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD 3).

China, UN Sign MOU on South-South Climate Cooperation [viewed]

China, UN Sign MOU13 April 2015: As a follow-up to its commitment at the 2014 Climate Summit, the Government of China has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the UN on South-South cooperation on climate change. Under the MOU, China and the UN will work together to promote the sharing of technologies, know-how and experience among countries in the global South.

Event: Second Gathering of the Road to Paris Partners [viewed]

As part of Climate Week Paris 2015, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the International Energy Agency (IEA), the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) will gather for their second meeting as partners of the Road to Paris initiative. A high-level session will take place the following morning, on 20 May 2015. In support of a transition to a low-carbon economy, the Road to Paris initiative aims to create business-oriented technology roadmaps, analyze barriers, identify financial and political solutions, as well as public-private partnership (PPP) opportunities, and strengthen business and government dialogue to create enabling frameworks for investment in the lead-up to the Paris Climate Change Conference and beyond.

Mayors Commit to Climate Action Ahead of Paris Conference [viewed]

iclei11 April 2015: The ICLEI World Congress 2015, the triennial sustainability summit of local and subnational governments worldwide, led to a number of climate announcements intended to increase local climate action. The Congress brought together over 3000 participants, including over 100 mayors from around the world, and boasted the largest number of participants at a Congress to date, with many others attending virtually via a live stream.

UN Urges Improved Water Governance and Action on World Water Day [viewed]

un-water22 March 2015: On World Water Day, UN leaders and others called for urgent cooperation to ensure access to safe drinking water and sanitation. The 2015 World Water Development Report (WWDR), which the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched for the Day, recommends a dedicated Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on water, which the report says would contribute to poverty alleviation and improvements in the environment, health and food and energy production.
