15 August 2011: In preparation for the 66th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the UN Secretary-General has released a report on Agricultural Technology for Development, which underscores the importance of adapting agricultural technologies for smallholders, especially women, in the context of higher food prices and climate change.
August 2011: The UN General Assembly has circulated the Report of the Secretary-General on the work of the Organization. This year's report (A/66/1) points to significant changes in the world since 2007, including the impacts of food, fuel and economic shocks, democratic movements in North Africa and the Middle East, and the rising incidence of mega-disasters, and outlines the UN's responses to these and other developments.
11 August 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has published a report of the UN Secretary-General that was prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in response to UNGA resolution 64/205 requesting the Secretary-General to report to it at its 66th session on the status of sustainable development in mountain regions.
11 August 2011: The African Regional Preparatory meeting on Global Geospatial Information Management (GGIM) met from 8-10 August 2011, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to establish a plan of action for African participation in GGIM initiative ahead of the High-Level Forum on GGIM to be held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, from 24-26 October 2011. The meeting culminated with the adoption of the Addis Ababa Declaration on Geospatial Information Management in Africa.
10 August 2011: In preparation of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the UN Secretary-General has circulated a background note on the implementation of UN environmental conventions, including the reports submitted by the Secretariats of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
8 August 2011: A report of the UN Secretary-General titled "Agriculture Development and Food Security: progress on the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on Food Security," has been released in preparation for the 66th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
4 August 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Department of Field Support (DFS) have been awarded UN 21 Awards for Climate Neutrality. The annual UN 21 Awards recognize outstanding initiatives by UN teams or staff to improve the delivery of the UN's programmes and promotion of UN values.
The Nigeria Alternative Energy Expo will focus on reforming Nigerian power and is taking place via a partnership with Nigerian's Energy Commission, Renewable energy programme of the Ministry of Environment, Presidential Action Committee on Power (PACP), as well as REEEP, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Global Compact, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and others. The event will bring together renewable energy power professionals, government and civil society representatives, as well as over 200 exhibiting companies from all over the world. It aims to: create a platform for all stakeholders to network and transfer knowledge and skills; raise awareness and educate the public about climate change in Nigeria and the world; showcase both local and international initiatives and technologies that are at the forefront of renewable energy and climate change resilience; mobilize Nigerians across all sectors to act on climate change in all aspects of their lives; and create a platform for business, government and NGOs to showcase alternative energy solutions and climate change initiatives and technologies.
29 July 2011: The sixth general meeting between the UN System and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its Associated Institutions identified regional priorities across seven broad thematic areas for collaboration, including climate change, sustainable development and disaster management, and energy.
27 July 2011: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has agreed to establish a committee of experts on global geospatial information management to coordinate international dialogue on spatial data infrastructures and enhance cooperation in that field.
