19 July 2012: Catarina de Albuquerque, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to safe drinking water, highlighted that the impacts of climate change are exacerbating water and sanitation challenges in Tuvalu. She recommend the Government of Tuvalu immediately adopt and implement its draft Water Act and its Sustainable and Integrated Water and Sanitation Policy.

22 June 2012: The third and final meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), Pre-Conference Informal Consultations Facilitated by the Host Country, and the UNCSD convened back-to-back in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 13-22 June 2012. During their ten days in Rio, government delegations concluded negotiations on the Rio outcome document, titled “The Future We Want.”

UN Bike Ride Promotes Sustainable Urban Transport Ahead of Rio+20 [viewed]

8 June 2012: The UN hosted a bicycle ride from its Headquarters to the Permanent Mission of the Netherlands in New York, US, organized by the Mission on 8 June 2012. The ride highlighted the benefits of bicycling as a method of sustainable, low-carbon urban transportation. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who did not ride but wore a bicycle helmet to open the event, remarked on cycling's benefits for riders' health and the planet.
