General Assembly Launches International Year of Quinoa [viewed]

20 February 2013: The UN General Assembly launched the International Year of Quinoa with a High-Level Panel discussion during its plenary at UN Headquarters in New York. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Bolivian President Evo Morales and First Lady of Peru Nadine Heredia participated in the launch, which will be celebrated under the theme "A future sown thousands of years ago."

UN Global Compact Special Advisor on Sustainable Development Appointed [viewed]

Brice Lalonde, former Executive Coordinator, UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20)15 February 2013: The UN Global Compact has appointed Brice Lalonde (France) as Special Advisor on Sustainable Development. He will work with the Global Compact Office to develop close relationships and opportunities for collaboration with governments and other stakeholders on sustainable development and follow-up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

UN Secretary-General Warns Against the “Gathering Threat of Climate Change” [viewed]

Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General11 February 2013: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered the Sorensen Distinguished Lecture on the UN at the Council on Foreign Relations, focusing on the crisis in Syria and the "threat of climate catastrophe." He noted that science has "long sounded the alarm" on “the gathering threat of climate change,” warning against projected increases of extreme weather events, development reversals, forced displacements, and tensions over resources.

Global Compact Bulletin Highlights Private Sector Solutions in Post-2015 [viewed]

February 2013: The latest issue of the UN Global Compact Bulletin highlights the completion of the pilot phase of Global Compact LEAD, which was launched in 2011. Private sector executives met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Davos, Switzerland, at the World Economic Forum (WEF), to mark the next phase of the corporate sustainability leadership platform.

Event: Seventh Regional EST Forum in Asia and Global Consultation on Sustainable Transport in the Post-2015 Development Agenda [viewed]

The integrated event of Seventh Regional EST Forum in Asia and Global Consultation on Sustainable Transport in the post-2015 Development Agenda will be held on 23‐25 April 2013 in Bali, Indonesia. The Regional EST Forum, under the theme of “Next Generation Transport System We Want for 21st Century~ Looking Beyond Rio+20”, will discuss and share the progress and achievements made by the countries towards achieving the goals under the Bangkok 2020 Declarations and will address EST in the context of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) outcome ‐ "The Future We Want". The Seventh EST Forum is expected to address, inter alia: EST in the Context of Rio+20 outcome and the post-2015 development agenda; Non‐Motorized Transport (NMT), road safety and social equity; promotion of Public Bicycle Schemes; full Integration of Public Transport Modes; Intelligent Transport System: A Vision of 21st Century Cities; regional connectivity (intra‐region, rural‐urban linkage, etc.) for sustainable development; building resilient transport infrastructure and services through EST Measures; financing Needs of Next Generation Sustainable Transport Systems for the 21st Century; Institutional Arrangements in Realizing Next Generation Sustainable Transport Systems for the 21st Century; Contribution of Railways towards realizing EST and sustainable development in post Rio+20 development; the contribution towards realizing EST in Asia by the Rio+20 $175 billion voluntary commitment for more sustainable transport by eight multilateral development banks as well as other voluntary commitments on sustainable transport; greenways initiative for converting road space into leaner parks and high quality pedestrian areas; and discussion on a Regional Agreement on Green freight in Asia.

SLoCaT Reviews Megatrends in Transport and Future Directions [viewed]

31 January 2013: A review document by the Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) considers megatrends in transport, the Partnership's effectiveness towards realizing its objectives, and future directions. The review document was prompted by the 2009 Partnership mandate to review progress within three years of its establishment.

Event: 14th Session of the Informal Consultative Process (ICP 14) [viewed]

The 14th meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (ICP) is to carry out an in-depth review of the oceans-related outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), and how those outcomes would impact and benefit international coordination and cooperation. The consideration of issues relating to sea-level rises and their impact on security and survival, particularly on low-lying coastal areas and island nations, against the background of sustainable development was also suggested by many delegations at ICP 13. They also proposed another theme for consideration, on aspects of marine scientific research related to sustainable development.

UN Secretary-General Outlines Ways to Advance Sustainable Development [viewed]

17 January 2013: In a lecture delivered at Stanford University, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described the current state of the world and "the future we must shape together." He outlined three ways to navigate our way through this "Great Transition," namely by advancing sustainable development, helping people meet their aspirations for democracy and dignity, and empowering women and young people.
