UN Secretary-General Releases Annual Report [viewed]

September 2012: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has released his annual report on the work of the Organization. The report includes nine sections and highlights Ban's five-year Action Agenda, which identifies opportunities for joint action. The section on promotion of sustained economic growth and sustainable development discusses: the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20); climate change; Sustainable Energy For All (SE4ALL); and the global jobs crisis.

UNGA 66 Concludes with Decisions on Africa, Indigenous Conference, SDG Working Group [viewed]

17 September 2012: Concluding the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), outgoing President Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser recalled the Assembly's focus on disaster prevention and response, including local resilience and risk mitigation, and on sustainable development and global prosperity. Also during the plenary meeting, the Assembly took decisions on Africa, the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, and the distribution of seats in the open working group on sustainable development (OWG).

International Ozone Day Marks Montreal Protocol's 25th Anniversary [viewed]

UNEP16 September 2012: The Secretariat of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (Montreal Protocol) celebrated the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on 16 September 2012. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) marked the Day with the release of a newsletter titled “Protecting Our Atmosphere for Generations to Come: 25 Years of the Montreal Protocol.”

Landlocked Developing Countries' Trade Ministers Adopt Almaty Declaration [viewed]

UN-OHRLLS14 September 2012: Ministers and officials responsible for trade of the Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) met in Almaty, Kazakhstan, at the Fourth Meeting of LLDCs' Trade Ministers, to define common positions on trade and development needs for LLDCs. The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Almaty Ministerial Declaration, which calls for international support to address the negative impacts of climate change on the availability of natural resources, in particular water and arable land.

UN Secretary-General Launches Oceans Compact [viewed]

12 August 2012: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has launched the Oceans Compact, which seeks to support and strengthen the implementation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The launch took place at a side event during the Yeosu International Conference, Republic of Korea, held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening for signature of UNCLOS.

UN Report Provides Update on Sustainable Agricultural Policies and Practices [viewed]

PACC Upgrades Water Reserves and Monitoring in Marshall Islands [viewed]

1 July 2012: The Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC) project is addressing water issues in the Marshall Islands by installing water meters and improving the Airport Water Reservoir, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has reported.
