Event: Seventh Regional EST Forum in Asia and Global Consultation on Sustainable Transport in the Post-2015 Development Agenda [viewed]

The integrated event of Seventh Regional EST Forum in Asia and Global Consultation on Sustainable Transport in the post-2015 Development Agenda will be held on 23‐25 April 2013 in Bali, Indonesia. The Regional EST Forum, under the theme of “Next Generation Transport System We Want for 21st Century~ Looking Beyond Rio+20”, will discuss and share the progress and achievements made by the countries towards achieving the goals under the Bangkok 2020 Declarations and will address EST in the context of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) outcome ‐ "The Future We Want". The Seventh EST Forum is expected to address, inter alia: EST in the Context of Rio+20 outcome and the post-2015 development agenda; Non‐Motorized Transport (NMT), road safety and social equity; promotion of Public Bicycle Schemes; full Integration of Public Transport Modes; Intelligent Transport System: A Vision of 21st Century Cities; regional connectivity (intra‐region, rural‐urban linkage, etc.) for sustainable development; building resilient transport infrastructure and services through EST Measures; financing Needs of Next Generation Sustainable Transport Systems for the 21st Century; Institutional Arrangements in Realizing Next Generation Sustainable Transport Systems for the 21st Century; Contribution of Railways towards realizing EST and sustainable development in post Rio+20 development; the contribution towards realizing EST in Asia by the Rio+20 $175 billion voluntary commitment for more sustainable transport by eight multilateral development banks as well as other voluntary commitments on sustainable transport; greenways initiative for converting road space into leaner parks and high quality pedestrian areas; and discussion on a Regional Agreement on Green freight in Asia.

SLoCaT Reviews Megatrends in Transport and Future Directions [viewed]

The review document was prompted by the 2009 Partnership mandate to review progress within three years of its establishment.

Event: 14th Session of the Informal Consultative Process (ICP 14) [viewed]

The 14th meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (ICP) is to carry out an in-depth review of the oceans-related outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), and how those outcomes would impact and benefit international coordination and cooperation. The consideration of issues relating to sea-level rises and their impact on security and survival, particularly on low-lying coastal areas and island nations, against the background of sustainable development was also suggested by many delegations at ICP 13. They also proposed another theme for consideration, on aspects of marine scientific research related to sustainable development.

UN Secretary-General Outlines Ways to Advance Sustainable Development [viewed]

17 January 2013: In a lecture delivered at Stanford University, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described the current state of the world and "the future we must shape together." He outlined three ways to navigate our way through this "Great Transition," namely by advancing sustainable development, helping people meet their aspirations for democracy and dignity, and empowering women and young people.

UN Secretary-General Reflects on Progress, Shortfalls in 2012 [viewed]

December 2012: The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) has published a guidebook on the green economy, the third in a series, offering insights on governments' strategies for implementing a green economy and overcoming challenges related to financing, institutional arrangements, integration and political leadership.

Event: Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States [viewed]

The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This UN conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia". In addition, a Partnerships Forum will take place on 30-31 August.
