30 January 2012: The UN Secretary-General's High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP) has released its final report, titled “Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing.” The report's 56 recommendations seek to mainstream sustainable development into economic policy, by integrating social and environmental costs into pricing and measuring of economic activities.
27 January 2012: The UN Greening the Blue Campaign has released the results of its staff survey, with 78% of respondents reported to have indicated that staff canteens in UN offices should not sell bottled water.
25 January 2012: An inter-agency report, titled "Green Economy in a Blue World," concludes that the ecological health and economic productivity of marine and coastal ecosystems can be enhanced from well-managed marine sectors.
25 January 2012: In a statement titled, “The Future We Want” delivered at the UN General Assembly (UNGA), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon outlined his plans for action over the next five years. He underscored sustainable development as first in his list of “five generational opportunities to creatively deliver on our core mission." His vision for advancing on sustainable development includes making progress on climate change, sustainable energy, and empowerment of women.
19 January 2012: The Fifth World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2012 was convened around a high-level segment focusing on policy and strategy, and three forums on: business and policy; technology and innovation; and finance and regulation.
16 January 2012: The Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) has published a report titled "The Global Bioenergy Partnership Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy," which represents the first global, government-level consensus on sustainability indicators for bioenergy.
16 January 2012: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All during his address to the opening ceremony of the fifth World Future Energy Summit (WFES), stressing the need to end energy poverty to ensure equal opportunities.
12 January 2012: The fifth Investor Summit on Climate Risk and Energy Solutions brought together close to 500 of the world's investors and financial players to showcase their actions and discuss promising trends to catalyze large-scale investment.
11 January 2012: In his remarks at the Group of 77 chairmanship handover ceremony in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored the importance of the leadership of the G77 in ensuring that "concrete actionable measures" are adopted at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
6 January 2011: The UN has announced that, as part of 2012 being designated International Year of Sustainable Energy for All, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) will form national bodies to promote action in countries where it is active.
