Event: 68th Session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific [viewed]

The 68th session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will focus on a four-track strategy to promote shared, sustainable and inclusive growth in the region by promoting market integration, physical connectivity, financial cooperation and joint action to address common vulnerabilities arising from shrinking resources and climate threats. The session will comprise both a senior officials segment (17-19 May), and a ministerial segment (21-23 May). The ministerial segment will include: a roundtable on the "Growing Together: Economic Integration for an Inclusive and Sustainable Asia-Pacific Century;" and a high-level panel on "Steering inclusive development amidst global turbulence and volatility". Event: Second Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum [viewed]

The second Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum is being organized by the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Knowledge Platform for Asia (Adaptation Knowledge Platform) and the Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (Adaptation Network). The Forum aims to provide an opportunity for participants to share frontline findings and innovations, opportunities and challenges in mainstreaming climate change adaptation into development. The Forum will focus on "Adaptation in Action," signifying a shift from deliberations to decisions, plans to policies and policies to practices.

UNESCAP Convenes South-East Asian Flood Risk Reduction Forum [viewed]

20 February 2012: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), together with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management, convened the South-East Asia Flood Risk Reduction Forum, which focused on lessons learned from the 2011 South-East Asian flooding and ways to increase resilience to future floods.

ESCAP, UNEP and ADB Release Asia-Pacific Green Growth Report [viewed]

16 February 2012: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) have released a report asserting that the challenges of resource constraints in the Asia-Pacific region are more serious than anywhere else, and proposing strategies for changing economic incentives to promote a green economy. The report was prepared as part of preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

ECOSOC Hears Calls for Greater Regional Cooperation in Asia-Pacific [viewed]

7 December 2011: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Annual Ministerial Review Regional Preparatory meeting for Asia and the Pacific has heard calls for greater regional cooperation in order to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). UN Launches Guidelines for Eco-efficient and Socially Inclusive Cities [viewed]

October 2011: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), in partnership with the Urban Design Lab of the Earth Institute, Columbia University, have jointly released the "Guidelines for developing eco-efficient and socially inclusive infrastructure," which provide practical tools for city planners and decision makers to reform urban planning and infrastructure design according to the principles of eco-efficiency and social inclusiveness.

Asia and the Pacific Meeting Addresses Sustainable Energy Development [viewed]

29 September 2011: The Expert Group Meeting on Sustainable Energy Development in Asia and the Pacific reviewed energy security challenges facing the region and outlined a regional agenda on the issue. Participants stressed the importance for countries in the region to have national policies that will ensure universal access to clean and efficient energy services to advance poverty reduction and improve health and well-being.

ESCAP Committee Highlights Importance of Trade in Low Carbon Goods [viewed]

29 July 2011: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Committee on Trade and Investment, which convened from 27-29 July 2011, in Bangkok, Thailand, highlighted the need for UN assistance to developing Asia-Pacific countries for them to realize the potential for trade and investment in low-carbon goods, technologies and services.

ESCAP Report Identifies Opportunities for Climate-Smart Goods and Technologies [viewed]

25 July 2011: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has released the "Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report 2011: Post-crisis Trade and Investment Opportunities," which concludes that trade in the Asia-Pacific region has rebounded to pre-crisis levels and the potential of climate-smart goods remains untapped.
