11 May 2010: During a visit to the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the EU expressed an interest in forging a deeper partnership with UNECA on various development issues, including climate change and land ownership in Africa.
The fifth World Urban Forum (WUF-5), which took place from 22-26 March 2010, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under the theme “The Right to the City: Bridging the Urban Divide,” was hosted by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the Government of Brazil.
30 March 2010: The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Union Commission have published the 2010 Economic Report on Africa, which is titled “Promoting High-level Sustainable Growth to Reduce Unemployment in Africa.” The Report, which is published annually, highlights the economic impacts of climate change in the African region, among other topics.
30 March 2010: The 2010 Joint Annual Meetings of the African Union (AU) Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance, and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Development, took place on 29-30 March 2010, in Lilogwe, Malawi. The meetings were preceded by the Committee of Experts meeting, which took place from 25-28 March 2010.
17 March 2010: The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the International Council for Science-Regional Office for Africa (ICSU-ROA) organized a consultative workshop on “Climate Change and Scientific Consequences in Africa: Post-Copenhagen” from 17-19 March 2010, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The aim of the workshop was to examine the role of African scientists in addressing the climate change challenge.
March 2010: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) released a study in its Energy Series titled “Financing Global Climate Change Mitigation,” as the result of work conducted by all five UN Regional Commissions in the context of the Global Energy Efficiency 21 (GEE21) Project, launched in December 2008 by UNECE.
12 March 2010: The UN Economic Commission for Africa's (UNECA) Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa (SRO-EA) has published a report that highlights the effects of climate change on food security in East Africa.
The second Africa Carbon Forum, which was held from 3-5 March 2010, in Nairobi, Kenya, sought to help build on growing interest in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in Africa, and concluded with expectations for a boost in Africa's share of the global carbon market.
21 February 2010: A meeting of the Committee of African Ministers of Finance and Planning and Governors of Central Banks (Committee of Ten) recognized the importance of pursuing a low-carbon growth path, but emphasized that the additional costs to achieve it should not be at the expense of existing under-resourced development needs.
7 February 2010: Several UN experts participated in the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, titled “Beyond Copenhagen: New Pathways to Sustainable Development,” which was held in New Delhi, India, from 5-7 February 2010, and organized by the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
