ECA Lecture Series Highlights Africa's Response to Climate Change [viewed]

© UNECA22 June 2009: As part of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Library Book Review Series, the UNECA organized a lecture to revisit the Stern Review on Climate Change on 22 June 2009, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Kwadwo Tutu, UNECA Economic Affairs Officer, and Josue Dione, Director of UNECA's Food Security and Sustainable Development Division and Coordinator of UNECA's African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC), highlighted the impacts of climate change on Africa, as well as the measures being taken in the region in response to this challenge.

UN Regional Commissions Hold First GEE21 Project Meeting [viewed]

Joint AU and UNECA Conference to Consider Progress Report on Implementation of Climate Change Programme [viewed]

May 2009: The Meeting of the Committee of Experts of the Second Joint Annual Meetings of the African Union (AU) Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance and UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development will take place in Cairo, Egypt, from 2-5 June 2009. During the meeting, experts will consider a Progress Report on Climate Change and Development, which aims to update the 2009 Joint Annual Meetings on the progress made in the implementation of the Climate Change and Development (Clim-Dev) Africa programme by the AU Commission and the UNECA since the 2008 conference (E/ECA/COE/28/9; AU/CAMEF/EXP/9(IV)).

4 March 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) organized a press conference with high-ranking African women who are attending the 53rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW53), at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The panel called for gender-specific responses, including plans and programmes to address the impacts of the financial, food and climate change crises.

ECA Partnership Forum Stresses Importance of Forging Africa's Common Position on Climate Change [viewed]

27 February 2009: The annual Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Partnership Forum, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in February 2009, offered the ECA and its development partners the opportunity to exchange views and provide an update on ongoing initiatives, as well as to showcase new ones. This year's discussion was dominated by the African climate change initiative, a programme initiated in 2006 and led by the Climate Information for Development in Africa (ClimDev Africa) programme – a joint partnership between the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank and the ECA.

UNEP GC25/GMEF Takes Decisions on Climate, International Environmental Governance and Mercury [viewed]

25th Session of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum

23 February 2009: Delegates to the 25th Session of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC25/GMEF), which met from 16-20 February 2009, in Nairobi, Kenya, took 17 decisions including on international environmental governance, a significantly increased UNEP budget, support to Africa on climate change, and mercury. In the decision on support to Africa, the GC requests the UNEP Executive Director to work with the UN Economic Commission for Africa to provide technical support to the African Climate Policy Centre once established, and to promote the mainstreaming of climate change into social and economic development processes. On coordination within the UN, the GC welcomes the Executive Director's efforts as chair of the UN Environment Management Group, including in promoting the UN's commitment in moving towards climate neutrality. In addition, the GC approved funding to support climate change activities.

29 January 2009: In a statement delivered at the 14th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), noted that although Africa' s economic performance is commendable, it is not sufficient to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and the continent now faces the pressing challenges of global financial crisis, climate change and the maintenance of peace and security. He stressed that the continent will bear most of the burden of climate change, and called for mainstreaming mitigation, adaptation, financing and technology issues into the African policy agenda.
