25 March 2009: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific's (ESCAP) Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR) opened on 25 March 2009, and will conclude on 27 March. Noting that Asia and the Pacific is the most disaster-prone region, participants underscored the importance of cooperation among governments in the region for disaster risk reduction (DRR).

Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2009 Analyses Triple Threats to Region, Proposes Solutions

23 March 2009: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will launch the 2009 edition of the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific, on 26 March 2009, in 20 cities across the region as well as New York, US, and Geneva, Switzerland. The Survey examines the impact of the convergence of three global crises – the economic downturn, food and fuel price volatility and climate change – on Asia and the Pacific, and how the region can tackle them.

The event, which will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, will feature a panel discussion on “Energy Crisis, Food Crisis, Financial Crisis and Climate Change in Transboundary Rivers Opportunities and Challenges.”

ESCAP to Convene Committee on Disaster Reduction [viewed]

March 2009: The Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will convene the First Session of the Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction, from 25-27 March 2009, in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop will include a high-level roundtable on regional cooperation for disaster risk reduction as well as sessions on: implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action in Asia and the Pacific; enhancing regional cooperation on disaster risk reduction in Asia and the Pacific; activities of ESCAP cooperative mechanisms on disaster risk reduction; and the strategic framework and proposed outputs for the proposed programme of work for 2010-2011.

UNESCAP Holds Green Industry Preparatory Conference in Bangkok [viewed]

International Conference on Green Industry in Asia

11 March 2009: A Preparatory Meeting to the International Conference on Green Industry in Asia, hosted by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), convened in Bangkok, Thailand, from 4-5 March 2009. Participants agreed that the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will organize a session on cleaner production, UNESCAP on sustaining growth and competitiveness, and the UN Environment Programme on eco-friendly products and environmental services. The International Conference on Green Industry in Asia, “Managing the Transition to Resource-efficient and Low Carbon Industries,” is being organized by UNIDO, UNESCAP and UNEP and will convene in Manila, the Philippines, from 8-11 September 2009.

ECLAC Presents Climate Change Reports

10 March 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has launched a report titled “Climate Change and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Review.” The report was released during a seminar on “Climate Change: The Challenges for Growth in Chile and Latin America,” which took place on 11 March 2009, in Santiago, Chile. The report concludes that Latin America and the Caribbean may suffer more impacts of climate change than other regions because of the number of island States present in the region, low coastal areas and prevalence of hurricanes. Considering greenhouse gas emissions in the region are relatively low (11.7% of global emissions in 2000) the authors recommend authorities to focus on adaptation.

4 March 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) organized a press conference with high-ranking African women who are attending the 53rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW53), at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The panel called for gender-specific responses, including plans and programmes to address the impacts of the financial, food and climate change crises.

ECA Partnership Forum Stresses Importance of Forging Africa's Common Position on Climate Change [viewed]

27 February 2009: The annual Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Partnership Forum, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in February 2009, offered the ECA and its development partners the opportunity to exchange views and provide an update on ongoing initiatives, as well as to showcase new ones. This year's discussion was dominated by the African climate change initiative, a programme initiated in 2006 and led by the Climate Information for Development in Africa (ClimDev Africa) programme – a joint partnership between the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank and the ECA.
