Event: Seventh “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference [viewed]

The Seventh “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference, convened by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE, or UNECE) Committee on Environmental Policy, is being prepared in accordance with the provisions of Reform Plan of the “Environment for Europe” process. This Conference will consider two main themes: “the sustainable management of water and water-related ecosystems” and “greening the economy: mainstreaming the environment into economic development.” Under the second theme, discussions will focus on the reduction of carbon emissions, energy efficiency, sustainable consumption and production, and the reconfiguration of financing and infrastructure to better accommodate environmental considerations. While the Astana Ministerial Conference is expected to address identified environmental issues of common concern in the UNECE region, the Conference provides an opportunity to address priority environmental issues in the Central Asian sub-region.

UNECE-FAO Workshop Highlights Green Building for Climate Change Mitigation [viewed]

© UNECE21 October 2009: A workshop on “Responding to climate change: wood's place in a global approach to green building,” was organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during the Timber Committee Week, held from 12-16 October 2009. Among the workshop's conclusions was agreement that green building is a solution to climate change mitigation: energy-efficient construction for new buildings and renovation of existing buildings can reduce 40-50% of energy used for space and water heating.

ECA, UNEP and UNDP Organize Gender and Climate Sensitization Training Workshop [viewed]

© UNECA19 October 2009: Participants at a three-day sensitization training on gender and climate change resolved to encourage political leaders and African lead negotiators to integrate gender issues into the climate change negotiations ahead of COP 15 in Copenhagen. The training, which was part of the implementation of the Nairobi Declaration of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment, was organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), with the collaboration of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
