January 2009: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) are jointly organizing the International Conference on Green Industry in Asia under the theme “Managing the Transition to Resource-Efficient and Low Carbon Industries.”
22 January 2009: The Asia-Pacific Business Forum 2009/Climate Game Change – Innovations and Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation convened in Bangkok, Thailand, on 21 January 2009. The Forum was organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and it brought together 300 representatives from the private sector, government, civil society and international organizations, with the aim of promoting new partnerships, ideas and resolve for combating climate change.
19 January: The Timber and Forestry programme of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have released a new web-based resource tool to enable researchers, policymakers, practitioners and the general public to access data on Europe's forests. The database includes information on the balance of carbon in forest ecosystems, forest health condition, status of forest biodiversity, aspects of production, protected forest areas, as well as social and economic aspects of the forestry sector.
15 January 2009: The UN has regionally launched its World Economic Situation and Prospects 2009 Report, a joint product of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the UN Conference on Trade and Development, and the five UN regional commissions.
18 December 2008: At a side event held during the 14th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, held in Poznań, Poland, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) launched the Global Energy Efficiency 21 (GEE21) project.
10 December 2008: The High-level Regional Policy Dialogue on “The Food-Fuel Crisis and Climate Change – Reshaping the Development Agenda,” jointly organized by the Government of Indonesia and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), convened from 9-10 December 2008, in Bali, Indonesia. The meeting recommended urgent, comprehensive and coordinated action to deal with the food, energy and financial crises, and climate change in the region.
11 December 2008: Wood-based energy bears significant potential as a fuel source for Serbia and other South-East European countries, concluded a workshop entitled “Woody Biomass - the Fuel Choice for Serbia,” held from 2-3 December 2008, in Belgrade, Serbia.
9 December 2008: The High-level Regional Policy Dialogue on “The Food-Fuel Crisis and Climate Change – Reshaping the Development Agenda,” organized by the Government of Indonesia and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), is convening in Denpasar, Indonesia, from 9-10 December 2008. The dialogue aims to identify strategies to address the impact of the food, energy and financial crises on Asia and the Pacific in the context of climate change, and prevent the triple crises from becoming a development emergency.
2 December 2008: During the annual session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 19-21 November 2008, its Committee on Sustainable Energy welcomed the announcement of the award of three contracts for work on energy efficiency.
1 December 2008: The “Geothermal Energy Week,” which opened on 1 December 2008, is hosted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Governments of Chile and Peru. The week will conclude on 5 December and include two main events: an international conference on the “Situation and perspectives for geothermal energy development in Latin America and the Caribbean,” to take place in Santiago, Chile; and a seminar on the potential for the development of geothermal energy in Peru, to be held in Lima, Peru.
