Event: Second Session of the Group of Experts on Renewable Energy [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will convene the 2nd meeting of the Group of Experts on Renewable Energy. Discussions will include: a report on the implementation of the Work Plan 2014–2015; progress made in renewable energy uptake, including key messages and next steps from the ongoing status report in the region; the UNECE's role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on energy, and contributing to global actions on climate change mitigation and adaptation, including the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Other topics include: the International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development; cross-cutting issues and coordination of work on renewable energy; renewal of the Mandate and Draft Work Plan of the Group of Experts on Renewable Energy for 2016–2017; and key messages for the Committee on Sustainable Energy. The Group of Experts on Renewable Energy was established to advance renewable energy and energy for all in the UNECE region. It also facilitates regulatory and policy dialogue and sharing of best practices, with a view to increasing the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

Event: 2nd Session of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will convene the 2nd session of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency to discuss best practices and financial, technical and policy barriers to improving energy efficiency in the UNECE region. The agenda includes: a workshop on best policy practices for promoting energy efficiency; the report on the implementation of the Work Plan of the Group of Experts for 2014–2015; the International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development; renewal of Mandate and Draft Work Plan of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency for 2016–2017; and key messages for the Committee on Sustainable Energy. The Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency was established to carry out concrete, results-oriented activities that enhance energy efficiency, mitigate climate change, and strengthen regional cooperation in the region.

ECLAC Reports on MDGs Progress [viewed]

ECLAC Explores Role of Fiscal Instruments in Climate Change Policies [viewed]

ECLAC7 September 2015: A seminar organized by the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) discussed the role of economic and fiscal instruments in countries' intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), which are part of the UN process to reach a universal agreement on climate change at the UN Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015. The seminar also launched the Climate Change, Environmental Taxation and Economic Instruments Network to foster a regular exchange of information among specialists on related practices.

World Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation Showcases Best Practices [viewed]

The event aimed to: foster the exchange of information, ideas and experiences gained in undertaking adaptation projects; discuss methodological approaches and experiences that illustrate how climate change adaptation can be implemented in practice; and enable networking among participants.

August 2015 Climate1 September 2015: During August 2015, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Adaptation Fund reported on climate finance developments, including new funding, project lessons and institutional developments. The World Bank, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) DTU Partnership (UDP) and the Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR) released publications and event news.

ESCAP Launches E-learning Platform for Disaster Resilience [viewed]

UNESCAP28 August 2015: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has launched an online e-learning platform to help countries in the region build capacity to withstand, adapt to and recover from natural disasters. The platform, called the Geo-referenced Information Systems for Disaster Risk Management (Geo-DRM) portal, is a component of ESCAP's efforts to advance regional implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030, which was adopted in March 2015.

Event: Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum 2015 [viewed]

The 2015 Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF) will provide a platform for participants to discuss regional options and the enabling policy conditions that would be required to move towards carbon neutral economies in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region, as well as associated challenges. The Forum aims to facilitate discussions, knowledge exchange and experience sharing on: policies and measures; tools and methodologies; and technologies and financial mechanisms, necessary for putting forward and implementing ambitious Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) to the global effort of keeping global temperatures below 2 degrees C. The Forum is organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UNEP Riso Centre, the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), and hosted by the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Event: Fifth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-V) [viewed]

To support Africa's preparedness for the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21), CCDA-V will be held on the theme “Africa, climate change and sustainable development: what is at stake at Paris and beyond?”. The conference will be the culmination of climate change dialogues across the continent and will focus on addressing the climate change, sustainable development and equity issues provided for in Article 2 of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the context of the broad theme on “Prospects for Sustainable, Resilient and Creative Economies in Africa in the Context of a Changing Climate”. CCDA-V aims to, among other things, contribute towards the development of common African positions regarding the post-Kyoto global climate governance regime, as well as anticipate the outcomes of COP21 and initiate preparations for their implementation. The event is organized under the auspices of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme, which is a consortium of the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
