5 November 2009: Regional discussions to identify support needed by Africa in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) highlighted the role of climate change.
The Seventh “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference, convened by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE, or UNECE) Committee on Environmental Policy, is being prepared in accordance with the provisions of Reform Plan of the “Environment for Europe” process. This Conference will consider two main themes: “the sustainable management of water and water-related ecosystems” and “greening the economy: mainstreaming the environment into economic development.” Under the second theme, discussions will focus on the reduction of carbon emissions, energy efficiency, sustainable consumption and production, and the reconfiguration of financing and infrastructure to better accommodate environmental considerations. While the Astana Ministerial Conference is expected to address identified environmental issues of common concern in the UNECE region, the Conference provides an opportunity to address priority environmental issues in the Central Asian sub-region.
3 November 2009: On the margins of the UNFCCC talks taking place in Barcelona, Spain, UN-Water presented a key message on Water and Climate Change Adaptation prepared for the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP15).
27 October 2009: The UN General Assembly Second Committee (Economic and Financial) held an interactive dialogue with Heads of the UN Regional Commissions on 27 October 2009, on “regional perspectives on the economic impacts of climate change.”

23 October 2009: The Technical Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) Pre-COP 15 (Second Meeting of the African High Level Expert Panel on Climate Change) convened from 19-23 October 2009, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and concluded with a call for a “fair, inclusive, effective and equitable new agreement in Copenhagen.” The session was the initiative of AMCEN and the African Union (AU), in collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
21 October 2009: A policy forum on “The Forest Sector in the Green Economy,” organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on 15 October 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland, highlighted the need to promote and maximize the forest sector's contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to reflect this in post-Kyoto climate change agreements.
21 October 2009: A workshop on “Responding to climate change: wood's place in a global approach to green building,” was organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during the Timber Committee Week, held from 12-16 October 2009. Among the workshop's conclusions was agreement that green building is a solution to climate change mitigation: energy-efficient construction for new buildings and renovation of existing buildings can reduce 40-50% of energy used for space and water heating.
19 October 2009: Participants at a three-day sensitization training on gender and climate change resolved to encourage political leaders and African lead negotiators to integrate gender issues into the climate change negotiations ahead of COP 15 in Copenhagen. The training, which was part of the implementation of the Nairobi Declaration of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment, was organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), with the collaboration of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
