UNISDR, UNESCO Convene Retreat on Post-Hyogo Disaster Framework [viewed]

19 November 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and the UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) convened a two-day UN High-Level Retreat to initiate work on a UN strategic plan for disaster risk reduction. Attended by representatives from 20 UN agencies, the Retreat was held from 19-20 November, in Paris, France.

World Meteorological Congress Approves Implementation Plan of the Global Framework for Climate Services [viewed]

WMO5 November 2012: The extraordinary session of the World Meteorological Congress concluded with the approval of the governance structure and implementation plan for the Global Framework for Climate Services, an initiative aimed at rolling out user-driven services such as seasonal climate outlooks and El Niño watches, flood prediction and drought monitoring tools.

Event: Second International Conference on Water Resources and Environmental Management (ICWRE 2013) [viewed]

This conference will convene around the theme “Water, Food, Energy Security and Climate Change,” and discussions will be organized around sub-themes including: water for sustainable future; global water security; water supply and sanitation; integrated water resources management (IWRM); and environment, water and health. The conference is being organized by Global Institute for Water, Environment, and Health (GIWEH), based in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Mohamadia School for Engineers, Rabat, Morocco, in partnership with UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education. It is convening in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), among others.

WHO, WMO Launch Atlas of Health and Climate [viewed]

29 October 2012: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) launched "The Atlas of Health and Climate" at an Extraordinary Session of the World Meteorological Congress (WMC) in Geneva, Switzerland. The Atlas highlights current and emerging challenges to human health and showcases how climate services can protect human health through prevention, preparedness and risk management.

WMO, IGAC Release Report on Impacts of Megacities on Air Pollution and Climate [viewed]

16 October 2012: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) project have released a report, titled “Impacts of Megacities on Air Pollution and Climate.” The report provides an initial assessment of available information on air pollution and climate impacts in megacities globally.

First South West Indian Ocean Climate Outlook Forum Warns of Low Precipitation Forecasts [viewed]

11 October 2012: The first South West Indian Ocean Climate Outlook Forum (SWIOCOF) was co-organized by Météo France, the Indian Ocean Commission (projet Acclimate) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This first Forum built the capacity of meteorologists on the methods and tools used to develop seasonal climate outlooks, and tailoring them to the challenges faced by islands.

The Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) was launched in 2009 by the World Climate Conference – 3 as a global partnership of governments and organizations that produce and use climate services[1]. This initiative of the United Nations system seeks to facilitate global access to continuously improved climate services in the four priority sectors of agriculture and food security, disaster risk reduction (DRR), health and water by the end of 2017. The objective for end-2021 is to facilitate access to improved climate services across all climate-sensitive sectors.

Addis Ababa Declaration Supports Global Framework on Climate Services [viewed]

WMO30 September 2012: The African Union Commission (AUC), African regional economic communities and Secretariat of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States have declared their support for the Global Framework on Climate Services (GFCS), a UN initiative spearheaded by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) which aims to strengthen and expand the provision of climate services.
