PROVIA7 May 2012: The Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA), a joint UN initiative, is inviting comments on its publication titled “PROVIA Guidance on Assessing Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation,” developed in cooperation with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). PROVIA is specifically requesting suggestions for case studies and examples from developing countries.

International Polar Year 2012 Conference Discusses Moving from Knowledge to Action [viewed]

27 April 2012: The International Polar Year (IPY) 2012 Conference convened around the theme “From Knowledge to Action,” with discussions on a variety of issues related to Arctic issues. Panel sessions addressed, inter alia: Earth structure and geodynamics; polar ocean processes; permafrost; marine, territorial and freshwater polar ecosystems; and communicating polar science.

Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum Issues Rainfall Warning [viewed]

WMO29 February 2012: The 30th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 30) concluded with a warning that the Greater Horn of Africa, parts of which have suffered badly from drought in recent years, could suffer below normal rainfall during the March-May rainy season.

Event: Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum [viewed]

This meeting is co-hosted by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and IGAD's Climate Prediction and Applications Centre, and supported by the UN Strategy on Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The Forum will discuss the prospects for the March-to-May rainy season and consider measures to ensure that early warning leads to early action in the event of a failure of the rains. In addition, ICPAC and UN/ISDR will hold joint training sessions to help strengthen the existing cooperation between climate scientists and disaster risk managers to advance information sharing for disaster risk reduction (DRR) in the region.

Event: Expert Consultation on Prioritizing Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies for Agriculture in South and Southeast Asia [viewed]

This expert consultation is being organized by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research's (CGIAR) Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Program (CCAFS), the Asia Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions, as well as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The workshop will: review best practices and technologies for climate smart agriculture; review the latest knowledge regarding the impact of climate change on agriculture; and prioritize research and development.
