First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa Adopts Nairobi Declaration [viewed]

16 April 2010: The First Conference of African ministers responsible for meteorology adopted the Nairobi Declaration in response to the increasing risks and threats to development posed by climate variability and change. The Conference, which was organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), in partnership with the African Union Commission, gathered around 30 ministers in Nairobi, Kenya, on 15-16 April 2010.

WMO Addresses Measurement Challenges in Climate Change Monitoring [viewed]

1 April 2010: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Bureau for Weights and Measures organized a workshop on “Measurement Challenges for Global Observation Systems for Climate Change Monitoring — Traceability, Stability and Uncertainty” from 1-3 April 2010, at WMO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The event aimed to explore ways to deliver more accurate and reliable observations of the Earth's climate.

WMO Publishes Statement on the Status of the Global Climate [viewed]

24 March 2010: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has published the Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2009, an annual survey by the agency about the weather and climate change. In the Statement, the WMO highlights that the first decade of the new millennium was the warmest on record.

WMO Celebrates World Meteorological Day [viewed]

23 March 2010: Each year, on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), its 189 members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a chosen theme. This year, the theme is “60 years of service for your safety and well-being.” The Day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization.

Event: WMO Training Workshop on Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems with focus on Institutional Partnerships and Cooperation [viewed]

This workshop will bring together senior executives from National Disaster Risk Management agencies, National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, and all agencies supporting early warning systems in the region. The purpose is to enhance early warning system capacities for saving lives by fostering cooperation among all those involved and linking to latest developments in forecasting.

Event: First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa [viewed]

This meeting is organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in partnership with the African Union (AU). African Ministers responsible for meteorology will meet to address ways of strengthening weather, climate and water information for decision making. The first part of the Conference, from 12 to 14 April, will be a preparatory meeting of experts and partners of all sectors concerned, while the Conference of Ministers will take place on 15 and 16 April. The preparatory expert segment will bring together a broad range of decision makers, users and providers, drawing on their experiences, to improve weather, water and climate information and services. These experiences include for example flood risk management in Mozambique, agrometeorology in Mali and drought insurance in Malawi. The Ministerial Conference is expected to endorse high level support to the expert-based Conference Statement from government representatives and to adopt a Conference Declaration for the development of weather, water and climate services in Africa. The Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa is a follow-up to the decision of the third World Climate Conference, held by the WMO in 2009, to create the Global Framework for Climate Services.

WMO Commission for Climatology Agrees on Future Strategy to Improve Climate Information and Services [viewed]

1 March 2010: Over 150 participants representing 88 countries and three international organizations met at the 15th session of the Commission for Climatology of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Antalya, Turkey, from 19-24 February 2010, and agreed on a future strategy to provide improved climate information and services.

International Experts Address Climate Change and Related Societal Demands at WMO Conference [viewed]

25 February 2010: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), jointly with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Turkish State Meteorological Service, convened a Technical Conference on Changing Climate and Demands for Climate Services for Sustainable Development from 16-18 February 2010, in Antalya, Turkey. More than 150 scientists from over 80 countries discussed the potential of current and future climate services in supporting governments, communities and businesses to cope with climate variability and change, and reduce related societal vulnerabilities. The event concluded with a special one-day joint session of the WMO's Commission for Climatology with the Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).
