Event: International Symposium on Drought and National Drought Policies [viewed]

This symposium is organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). It will build on the WMO meeting on national drought policies held at George Mason University, Fairfax, US, from 14-15 July 2011, which outlined steps for countries to reduce drought risks and help coordinate the development of a "best-practices" compendium on developing drought policies. The collaboration between the WMO and UNCCD builds on recent partnerships, such as on the use of the Standard Precipitation Index as a universal drought index.

UNEP, WMO Release Black Carbon and Tropospheric Ozone Assessment [viewed]

14 June 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) have released a publication titled “Integrated Assessment of Black Carbon and Tropospheric Ozone.” The report suggests that fast action on pollutants including black carbon, ground level ozone and methane may help limit near term global temperature rise.

World Meteorological Congress Sets Priorities for Next Four Years [viewed]

World Meteorological Congress Reappoints WMO Secretary-General [viewed]

25 May 2011: The World Meteorological Congress reappointed Michel Jarraud for a four-year term as the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The Congress also elected David Grimes (Canada) as President, Antonio Divino Moura (Brazil) as First Vice-President, Mieczyslaw Ostojski (Poland) as Second Vice-President, and Abdalah Mokssit (Morroco) as Third Vice-President.
