High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policy Convenes [viewed]

12 March 2013: The High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policy (HMNDP), organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), among other partners, is taking place from 11-15 March 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. The HMNDP brings together world leaders, government decision makers, development agencies, and leading scientists and researchers to discuss drought preparedness and management policies.

UNCCD, WMO Launch Global Campaign for Drought Mitigation [viewed]

ClimDev-Africa Highlights Commitment to Tackling Climate Change [viewed]

7 March 2013: Participants at the Fourth Session of the Steering Committee Meeting of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Initiative reiterated their commitment to tackling climate change impacts in Africa, and recognized a need for the three lead partners, the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UN ECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), to work as one in implementing its 2013 work plan.

GCOS Meeting Identifies Climate Observations Needs of Adaptation Activities [viewed]

6 March 2013: A GCOS meeting took place recently in Offenbach, Germany, gathering experts to determine the kinds of climate observations needed for implementing climate adaptation activities. The German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD) hosted the gathering, which was jointly organized by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

WMO's Voluntary Cooperation Programme Reports on 2012 Activities [viewed]

WMO25 February 2013: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued the January-December 2012 newsletter from its Voluntary Cooperation Programme (VCP) and Development and Regional Activities Department. The publication details, among other activities, new funding agreements to support climate service systems in West Africa, Haiti, Peru and Ethiopia, and summarizes the outcomes of past partnerships, including on drafting meteorology bills, installing automatic weather stations and updating a meteorological service strategic plan.

GCOS Newsletter Outlines Implementation Efforts on Climate Monitoring and Climate Services [viewed]

February 2013: The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) has released the first edition of its newsletter for 2013, outlining events of relevance to climate monitoring and recent activities of the programme, including, among other things, discussions at the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on GCOS adequacy and progress reports.

WMO Statement Highlights 2012 Global Climate Extremes [viewed]

WMO28 November 2012: According to the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) Provisional Statement on the State of Global Climate in 2012, released at the Doha Climate Change Conference on 28 November 2012, the years 2001-2011 were among the warmest on record and the first ten months of 2012 yielded above-average temperatures globally.
