Capacity Building and Technology Update: TEC, CTCN Board Meet, Capacity-Building Initiatives Focus on Renewables, Subsidiary Bodies Prepare for Bonn Session [viewed]

unfccc_unitar_unep_unhabitat_wmo11 May 2016: Under the international climate regime, industrialized countries provide developing States, in particular small island developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), with financial, technical and capacity-building support to help them implement mitigation and adaptation actions. A number of key meetings related to technology issues took place over the past few weeks, including the twelfth meeting of the Technology Executive Committee (TEC) and the seventh meeting of the Advisory Board of the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), which set the course for the years ahead. The CTCN Advisory Board recently received its 100th request for assistance and kicked off its series of 2016 Stakeholder Engagement Forums. Some of the capacity-building activities that took place over the past month focused on renewables, while others traced linkages among climate change, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and sustainable development.

Event: IGAD-ICPAC Workshop on Flood and Drought Management in Greater Horn of Africa [viewed]

The aim of this workshop is to enhance participants' understanding of the different practices for flood and drought management and to familiarize with the new products of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), including a flood hazard map, live web-map and geoportal. The workshop aims to: create awareness about available tools, data and initiatives for flood and drought monitoring in the Greater Horn of Africa region developed through collaboration between IGAD and UN Institute for Training and Research's Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNITAR-UNOSAT); assess specific needs and challenges in flood and drought management in ICPAC member States; illustrate potential ways to further improve national capacities based on shared experiences among participants and organizers; identify potential interest in the integration of available country-level data into IGAD-ICPAC's flood and drought monitoring system; and collaborate with national entities to establish in-country projects.

Event: UN CC:Learn Steering Group Meeting 2016 [viewed]

UN CC:Learn Steering Group Meeting 2016 will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 23-25 February 2016. This event will review progress with the annual work programme, and provide feedback and guidance on overall project implementation of UN CC:Learn. UN CC:Learn is a partnership of over 30 multilateral organizations supporting countries in design and implementation of systematic, recurrent and results-oriented climate change learning. Globally, the partnership supports knowledge sharing, promotes the development of common climate change learning materials, and coordinates learning interventions through a collaboration of UN agencies and other partners. UN CC:Learn also supports countries in developing and implementing national climate change learning strategies. Through its engagement at the national and global levels, UN CC:Learn contributes to the implementation of UNFCCC Article 6 (training, education and public awareness) and the 2012-2020 Doha Work Programme on Article 6 of the Convention. Funding for UN CC:Learn is provided by the Swiss Government and UN partners. The Secretariat for UN CC:Learn is hosted by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

Event: Course on Geospatial Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Horn of Africa [viewed]

The aim of this 10-day course, which is being sponsored by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), is to provide participants with: geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing methodologies related to disaster risk assessment; and training on the concepts of available geospatial technologies and methodologies for risk assessment and satellite-based mapping. At the end of the course, students are be expected to be able to: define and describe basic concepts and terminologies related to geospatial information technology (GIT); apply basic methods and functionalities for GIS analysis and mapping; identify, access, search, collect, organize and analyze geospatial data relevant to DRR; apply GIS methodologies and tools to perform disaster risk assessment; and understand and explain the advantages and limitations of using geospatial information in DRR.

The course will: provide insight into the various tools available in GIS for DRR; and introduce students to applications of geospatial technologies for DRR, with case studies for flood and drought, and map layouts. This course will include: lectures and GIS lab exercises using local datasets and real case scenarios; 10 modules; and a balanced approach between theoretical and practical methodologies.

The course is targeted to disaster management professionals working in government organizations who want to strengthen their practical skills in applications of geospatial technologies for DRR. Upon completion of the course, students will be presented with a UN Certificate from UNITAR. Participants are encouraged to complete the course ‘Getting Started with GIS' (http://training.esri.com/gateway/index.cfm?fa=catalog.webCourseDetail&courseid=2500).

Event: First International Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Sustainable Development [viewed]

The first International Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Sustainable Development will explore how public-private partnerships (PPPs) can contribute to sustainable development. The forum will focus on PPPs as tools to advance sustainable development at the local level, as impactful PPPs can be used not only for large-scale national projects, but also for smaller local-level projects. Amina Mohammed, UN Special Adviser on Post 2015 Development Planning, will give a keynote address. This forum will include plenary sessions on the role of PPPs in combating climate change and the specificities of PPPs at the local level, as well as technical workshops to learn about the legal and financial aspects of PPPs. It will also include a ‘Good Practices Forum,' organized with the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). In addition, the forum will provide the space to showcase examples of successful PPPs in the sectors of transport, energy, water supply and waste management. The Forum is being organized jointly by the Government of France, the Agglomeration of Annemasse and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), in partnership with other UN agencies.
