UNISDR Reports on DRR and Adaptation Writeshops [viewed]

19 April 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has reported on the four writeshops, which were co-convened with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and conducted since 2010 in Thailand, Ghana, Costa Rica and Barbados. UNISDR underlines that they have helped increase the body of published literature on disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation.

UNISDR, Columbia University Convene Dialogue on Disaster-Resilient Society [viewed]

12 April 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), Columbia University, the Permanent Mission of Japan to the UN, and the Urban Climate Change Research Network convened a dialogue titled “From Sendai to Rio - Cultivating a Disaster-Resilient Society for Sustainable Development,” which addressed the significance of building climate and disaster resilience in coastal cities.

Latin American Local Leaders Discuss Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

4 April 2012: The sixth Latin-American Congress of Cities and Local Authorities convened under the theme of “Stronger local governments.” At the meeting, organized by the Latin American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Associations of Local Governments (FLACMA) and hosted by the Chilean Association of Municipalities, participants discussed disaster risk reduction (DRR) in development planning.

UNISDR Names Venetian Mayor Urban Resilience Champion [viewed]

28 March 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has announced that the Mayor of Venice, Giorgio Orsoni, has been named Europe's first Champion of Urban Resilience. The award was presented at the UNISDR Building Cities Resilience to Disasters in Europe: Protecting Cultural Heritage and Adapting to Climate Change conference.

ASEAN, UNISDR and Partner Convene DRR and Climate Adaptation Training [viewed]

21 March 2012: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction (GFDRR) convened the ASEAN Training Course on Urban Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), which brought together 40 mayors, local government leaders and city officials from eight countries.

Kiribati to Purchase Fiji Land as “Climate Change Insurance” [viewed]

15 March 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that the Kiribati Cabinet has recently agreed to purchase land in neighboring Fiji, as “climate change insurance” for its population. The decision comes as Kiribati President Anote Tong renews calls to the international community to address the effects of climate change threatening to submerge many of Kiribati's low-lying atolls.
