21 January 2009: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has released a revised 2009 Terminology Report, which aims to promote common understanding and common usage of disaster risk reduction concepts and to assist the disaster risk reduction efforts of authorities, practitioners and the public.
17 November 2008: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has
appointed Margareta Wahlström (Sweden) as Assistant Secretary-General for
Disaster Risk Reduction and the Secretary-General's Special Representative for
the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action in the Secretariat for the
International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR).
23 October 2008: The Third Congress on Women in Politics and
Governance: Focus on Gender, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
took place from 19-22 October 2008, in Manila, Philippines. The event was
organized by the Center for Asia-Pacific Women in Politics in partnership with
the UN/International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR), the UN
Development Programme (UNDP), and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), among
other organizations.
October 2008: The UN International Strategy for Disaster
Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released its proposal in response to the Bali Action
Plan's call for enhanced action on adaptation through consideration of disaster
risk reduction strategies, risk management and risk transfer mechanisms.
9 October 2008: European countries met from 9-10 October
2008, in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, to discuss practical ways to reduce the
impacts of natural hazards through strengthened collaboration among the World
Meteorological Organization's (WMO) National Meteorological and Hydrological
Services and disaster risk management institutions.
7 October 2008: On the eve of International Day for Disaster
Reduction, during a news conference in New York, US, UN Under-Secretary-General
for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes
underlined the cost-effectiveness of reinforcing hospitals to make them safe
from disasters. He explained that the Day aims to raise awareness of the
inter-connection between disaster reduction and climate change prevention,
mitigation and preparedness.
October 2008: The Third Global Congress of Women in Politics
and Governance will convene in Manila, Philippines, from 19-22 October 2008,
with a focus on gender in climate change and disaster risk reduction.
September 2008: The 2008 International Day for Disaster
Reduction, celebrated on 8 October, will focus on making hospitals and health
facilities safe from disaster. The Day will be part of the UN International
Strategy for Disaster Reduction's (UN/ISDR) new World Disaster Reduction
Campaign 2008-2009: Hospitals Safe from Disasters.
25 August 2008: Achim Steiner UN Under-Secretary General and
the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Executive Director, spoke on risk and
climate change at the International Disaster Risk Conference (IDRC), which
convened in Davos, Switzerland, from 25-29 August 2008.
August 2008: This UN International Strategy for Disaster
Reduction (UN/ISDR) publication emphasizes the special vulnerability of women
to disaster risk, as well as their role in preparedness and response efforts.
Through a series of good practices from various parts of the world, the report
shows the linkages among women's experiences with natural resource management,
climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR).
