UN/ISDR Calls for Increased Education on Disasters and Climate Change [viewed]

UN/ISDR Pilots Resilience Local Government Self-Assessment Tool [viewed]

14 December 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that, together with the ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, it has piloted the Local Government Self-Assessment Tool (LG-SAT), designed to assist disaster reduction efforts by cities and local governments that have signed up to the global "Making Cities Resilient" Campaign.

Event: Fourth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

The aim of the Fourth Session is to continue the momentum into a durable and sustained effort from all actors (governments, NGOs and civil society, international agencies and organizations, academic and technical institutions, and the private sector) to take shared responsibility in reducing risks and reinforcing resilience in our communities. Sunday, 19 May, will be reserved for a preparation day. Monday, 20 May, will be a day for innovative dialogue. The official agenda will be from 21-23 May. The Session will include an event focused on small island developing States (SIDS), addressing partnerships toward DRR for SIDS.

UN/ISDR Releases Brief on Building Resilience in Africa [viewed]

December 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released a policy brief titled “Effective measures to build resilience in Africa to adapt to climate change.” The brief, issued during the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa, builds on information provided by countries in progress reports on the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action.

UN/ISDR Awards Swedish City Role Model Status for Flood Protection22 November 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has awarded the municipality of Kristianstad, Sweden, with role model status for its efforts in flood protection. A city is designated by UN/ISDR as a role model when it demonstrates good practices in building resilience and safety in at least five out of the Ten Essentials of the "Making My City Resilient" campaign.

UN Recognizes Indonesian President as DRR Champion [viewed]

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia (photo courtesy of the UN)18 November 2011: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has recognized the Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, as the first UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) global champion of disaster risk reduction (DRR). This appointment was officially made at the 19th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, which convened in Bali, Indonesia, from 17-19 November 2011.
