10 October 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that over 30 cities in Pakistan have joined the UN disaster reduction campaign “Making Cities Resilient: My City Is Getting Ready!”
6 October 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has reported that UN/ISDR Champion, Loren Legarda of the Philippines, has called for a holistic approach to flood risk, in the form of a national integrated flood warning and response system.
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction aims to raise awareness about how people are taking action to reduce their risk to disasters. In 2011, the International Day for Disaster Reduction is focused on children and young people.
9 September 2011: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)'s Asia-Pacific centre for training local authorities, CIFAL Jeju, convened a workshop on knowledge and skill sharing for more resilient and integrated disaster risk management among the region's municipalities. The workshop aimed, among other things, to build capacities for disaster risk management among participants from the region.
16 September 2011: The UN Secretary-General has launched the annual report prepared by the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Gap Task Force, titled "The Global Partnership for Development: Time to Deliver." This report assesses the current state of the global partnership to meet the MDGs, and includes a section on access to technology and funding to address climate change.
The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) and the University of the West Indies are calling for applications from young scholars, practitioners, policymakers and others from the Caribbean who are working in the field of climate change and disaster risk reduction to participate in a Writeshop. Through the Writeshop, participants are expected to produce a peer-review, publishable quality article and they will gain enhanced awareness of the process of writing papers for academic journals. These skills will allow their work to be eligible for incorporation into publications of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other high-level scientific bodies and consequently inform policy making on key issues of risk and climate.
8 September 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released an interview with Margareta Wahlström, Assistant Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, carried out by Eurasylum, on the latest evidence on climate migration.
3 September 2011: Flavia Munaaba, Ugandan Minister of State for the Environment, opened the Special Joint Session on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) during the 29th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF29). The Special Session was convened to effect a paradigm shift for addressing climate change and risks within the region, with participants highlighting progress in reducing drought risk so far.
24 August 2011: During World Water Week, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) called for increased investments in disaster-resilient infrastructure as well as smarter water management to avoid drought, floods and other water-related disasters, particularly in urban areas.
23 August 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released a report titled “At the Crossroads Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Asia and the Pacific.”
