He further stressed that nowadays, reasons for displacement also include "extreme poverty, environmental degradation, climate change and the growing and complex interrelationship between these factors and conflict."

21 June 2012: The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN University (UNU) released a report titled “Climate Change, Vulnerability and Human Mobility: Perspectives of Refugees from the East and Horn of Africa” on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). NGOs Urge Stronger Measures for Protection of Climate Refugees [viewed]

5 July 2012: Participants in the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)'s Annual Consultations with NGOs have recommended developing stronger national and international frameworks to recognize and assist people displaced by climate change. According to the NGO representatives, in many situations, protection currently is based only on the goodwill of the countries concerned.
