Event: Workshop on Developing Forest Adaptation Strategies under Changing Climate Scenarios [viewed]

In collaboration with the United States Forest Service (USFS), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is organizing a regional workshop on forest fire management that will focus on developing forest adaptation strategies under changing climate scenarios and the use of geospatial support systems for improved forest fire management. Delegates from relevant institutions of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan will participate. The workshop will devote one day to policy, during which senior policy makers from the different countries will be invited to share experiences, challenges and lessons learned, along with recommendations for improving policies, mainstreaming of technical inputs and future collaboration. The workshop will dedicate two days to technical training on: fire detection mapping, highlighting the underlying theory of remote sensing; and operational aspects of the SERVIR-Himalaya forest fire monitoring application. Other issues on the agenda will be climate change, forest fire risk assessment, and fire behavior models.

GCOS Meeting Identifies Climate Observations Needs of Adaptation Activities [viewed]

6 March 2013: A GCOS meeting took place recently in Offenbach, Germany, gathering experts to determine the kinds of climate observations needed for implementing climate adaptation activities. The German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD) hosted the gathering, which was jointly organized by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Event: Inter-Ministerial and Experts Conference on Biosphere Reserves in the Caribbean Sub-Region [viewed]

Organized by the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis and the UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Man and the Biosphere Programme, this meeting will convene under the theme "Tools for Sustainable Development and Growth." The objective of the event is to facilitate discussions on the identification of appropriate locations for new biosphere reserves as well as their integration with local/national sustainable development and adaptation to climate change plans.

UNESCO IOC26 February 2013: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reported on the impacts of the La Niña phenomenon in 2010-2011, which caused a massive ocean heatwave in the Indian Ocean, more than 10,000 km off of Australia's western coast.
