13 March 2009: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held an international experts meeting on “Climate Change and Arctic Sustainable Development: scientific, social, cultural and educational challenges,” which convened from 3-6 March 2009, in Monaco. The meeting brought together experts in the social and natural sciences, ethics, education and international affairs who sought the local expertise of indigenous peoples in drafting a set of 66 recommendations for follow-up action.

New report highlights crucial role of water in development

12 March 2009: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has presented the UN World Water Development Report 3, which will be launched at the Fifth World Water Forum, scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 16-22 March 2009. The Report, coordinated by the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), is the result of a cooperative effort by the 26 UN agencies and entities that make up UN-Water.

9 February 2009: A new radiosonde will be developed under the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Reference Upper-air Network (GRUAN) to allow more accurate measurements of temperature and humidity trends in the atmosphere. GRUAN is being developed by GCOS, which is sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) jointly with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the UN Environment Programme and the International Council for Science.

10 February 2009: The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) workshop on “Evaluating and Improving Regional Climate Projections” was held from 11-13 February 2009, in Toulouse, France, to discuss the way forward in producing climate information on regional, in addition to global, scales. The WCRP, sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization, the International Council for Science and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, aims to improve climate predictions and our understanding of human influence on climate through observations and modeling of the Earth system and the policy relevant assessment of climate conditions.

Scientists at UNESCO Forum Call for Action to Halt Rising Acidity in World's Oceans [viewed]

2 February 2009: Over 150 leading marine scientists from 26 countries are calling for immediate action by government leaders worldwide to sharply reduce carbon dioxide emissions so as to avoid widespread and severe damage to marine ecosystems from ocean acidification. The call was made with the release of the Monaco Declaration on Ocean Acidification, which was developed by participants attending a UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) symposium on “The Ocean in a High-CO2 World,” from 6-9 October 2008, in Monaco.
