UNESCO's Executive Board Calls for Developing a Biodiversity Initiative [viewed]

19 May 2011: The Executive Board of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has confirmed its call for UNESCO to develop a coherent Biodiversity Initiative encompassing all areas of competence and work of UNESCO – natural and social sciences, education, culture and communication. The Initiative will focus on the underlying drivers of biodiversity erosion and loss, and will encompass actions aimed at providing assistance to UNESCO member States underpinning the implementation of the UN system-wide Strategic Plan for Biodiversity.

Event: Eighth Session of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission's Regional Committee for the Western Indian Ocean (IOCWIO-VIII) [viewed]

The agenda for this session includes a presentation of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Draft Priorities and Implementation Strategies for 2012-2013 related to: prevention and reduction of the impacts of natural hazards; mitigation of and adaptation to climate change and variability; safeguarding the health of ocean ecosystems; World Heritage Sites; and management procedures and policies leading to the sustainability of coastal and ocean environment and resources. Participants will also discuss national programmes and priorities in Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa and Tanzania.

UNESCO Director-General Outlines Preparations for Rio+20 [viewed]

9 May 2011: In her opening statement to the 186th session of the Executive Board of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General, outlined UNESCO's preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), its efforts to raise the profile of biodiversity conservation, and its support to efforts to address climate change.

Event: Third International Workshop on Advances in the Use of Historical Marine Climate Data [viewed]

This workshop is organized jointly by the WMO/IOC Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) and the European Space Agency (ESA), and is sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the Climate Variability and Predictability Project (CLIVAR) and the Ocean Observations Panel for Climate (OOPC). This workshop will showcase and build on recent advances in marine climatology, including: evaluation, use and improvement of the over 300-year record of ICOADS; development of multi-decadal, homogeneous gridded datasets for climate applications; and characterization of uncertainty and bias in marine observations and products. The aim of the workshop is to recommend a 10-year action plan for improved integration and accessibility of climatological observations.

Event: [Cancelled] International Conference on Groundwater Resources Management: Adaptation Measures to Water Scarcity Science and Policy Responses [viewed]

Due to unforeseen circumstances the "Second UNESCO-UCI International Conference on Groundwater Resources Management" has been cancelled. This Conference is jointly organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the University of Irvine, California (UCI). This Second UNESCO-UCI 2011 Conference on ‘Groundwater Resources Management' will evaluate the progress made in groundwater management since the First Conference in 2008. The four themes of the conference are: the role of groundwater in adapting to the impacts of global and climate changes; strengthening groundwater management for sustainable development; innovative methods and technologies for groundwater management; and groundwater education, cooperation and governance. The Conference results will be presented at the 6th World Water Forum (March 2012, Marseille, France) and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20, in June 2012, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

Event: 11th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities: World Heritage Cities and Climate Change [viewed]

The theme of the 11th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities is "World Heritage Cities and Climate Change." Recognizing that in the face of climate change, World Heritage Cities are among the most vulnerable places to experience rapidly occurring changes, the Congress aims to create a platform for dialogue and exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge on the issue of World Heritage Cities and Climate Change and its transfer into policy and action. The Congress will include sessions on adaptation and mitigation measures to be taken by historic cities, a poster session featuring case studies related to the theme of the Congress, and activities for a select group of journalists, who will contribute their views about the relations between heritage and climate change.

GCOS Releases Details on Public Review of 2011 Satellite Supplement for the Global Observing System for Climate [viewed]
