Event: The IOCCP Surface Ocean CO2 Data-to-Flux Workshop [viewed]

This workshop, organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), will bring together participants from all the communities (observational, modelling, sensor development, platform development and operations, data management) that have a strong contribution to make in enabling the goals for the next ten years for a global sea surface carbon observing system. The workshop will run as a mix of plenaries and theme focused discussion groups.

Event: Experts Meeting on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development and Adaptation in SIDS [viewed]

The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is organizing this international expert meeting, with participants primarily from small island developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, representing national education representatives, curriculum development experts, representatives of school and education networks, scientists and climate change experts, representatives of multilateral agencies and civil society. The conference will focus on the challenges climate change poses to education systems in SIDS, and on promoting education to enhance adaptation to climate change in the context of sustainable development. The meeting will develop a road map and recommendations to serve as a contribution to UNFCCC COP 17, the UNCSD and the End-of-Decade Conference of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

UNESCO and UNEP Release Climate Change Starter's Guidebook [viewed]

26 August 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have released a publication titled “Climate Change Starter's Guidebook,” which is intended to serve as a starting point for mainstreaming climate change education into curricula lesson plans and programs.

Report by UNESCO and Partners Reviews Challenges in Managing Iraq's Marshlands [viewed]

25 August 2011: According to a newly released report by the UN Integrated Water Task Force, UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), within the context of the first four-year UN Development Assistance Framework for Iraq, marshlands in Iraq must be managed by balancing the various benefits derived from their ecosystems.

Event: CBD Expert Meeting on Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity [viewed]

The CBD Expert Meeting to Develop a Series of Joint Expert Review Processes to Monitor and Assess the Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity aims to: identify gaps and barriers in existing monitoring and scientific assessment of those impacts, in terms of their linkages to relevant global policy processes; develop options for addressing identified gaps and barriers, including a proposal for the development of a series of joint expert review processes; and identify necessary collaboration activities to implement possible options for addressing identified gaps and barriers.

Event: CoastGIS 2011 [viewed]

CoastGIS 2011 will be hosted in Oostende, Belgium, by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchage (IODE) Project Office. This conference will cover the following thematic areas: impact of climate change on the coast, coastal communities and marine resources; environmental conservation in the coastal zone; pollution monitoring and control; sustainable use of coastal resources; integrating coastal and river basin catchment data; disaster monitoring and mitigation at the coast; informing and involving the public in coastal decision making; planning for sustainable coastal tourism; coastal planning and management for small islands; and protecting coastal heritage.

Event: The Ocean Carbon Cycle at a Time of Change: Synthesis and Vulnerabilities [viewed]

This meeting will provide inputs the further development of the ocean carbon observing systems and to the next (fifth) assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It will also form the basis of a number of planned synthesis papers. The meeting will include plenary talks, poster sessions and meetings of individual working groups.

UNESCO to Launch Course on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development [viewed]

20 July 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will launch a Teacher Education Course on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development (CCESD) in late 2011. The course is being developed for UNESCO by professors at Sustainability Frontiers, an international alliance of sustainability and global educators.
