16 October 2009: The United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management has published its first report, entitled “Towards Sustainable Production and Use of Resources: Assessing Biofuels.”
13 October 2009: An African Parliamentarians Summit, entitled “Climate Change: One Africa, One Voice, One Position,” convened from 13-14 October 2009, at the headquarters of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya.
13 October 2009: Large mammals, such as gorillas and elephants, are keystone species in African rainforests and should be included in the upcoming climate change negotiations in Copenhagen, according to UN Ambassador for the Year of the Gorilla Ian Redmond.
2 October 2009: The Governors' Global Climate Summit 2, held from 30 September-2 October 2009, in Los Angeles, US, produced a declaration in which leaders present at the meeting committed to work together to pursue clean transportation and mobility, support national climate change legislation, and include forests in climate policy development.
6 October 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has compiled a report that illustrates how the ocean's carbon capture and storage systems (CCS) are being undermined by human activity, thereby harming their ability to “sequester” greenhouse gas emissions.
5 October 2009: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) joined the Nairobi Framework, an initiative aimed at assisting developing countries especially those in sub-Saharan Africa, to improve their level of participation in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
1 October 2009: After being nominated and self-selected by civil society organizations (CSOs) worldwide, the CSO representatives to the UN-REDD Policy Board were announced to be: Pacifique Mukumba Isumbisho, Support Center for Indigenous Pygmies and Vulnerable Minorities; Effrey Dademo, the Papua New Guinea Eco-Forestry Forum; Paula Moreira, Amazon Environmental Research Institute; and Rosalind Reeve, Global Witness.
September 2009: The UN-REDD Programme published the second issue of its newsletter, featuring news on the UN high-level event on forests and climate change, a commentary on REDD and indigenous peoples' engagement in Africa, and reports on a technical meeting on forest degradation and a measuring, reporting and verification meeting, both held in September 2009, in Rome, Italy.
29 September 2009: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) are co-hosting the Governors' Global Climate Summit, which is being held in Los Angeles, California, from 30 September-2 October.
24 September 2009: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) are supporting an innovative mechanism for insuring renewable energy projects in developing countries. The global renewable energy insurance facility, which was launched by Munich, RSA Insurance Group (RSA) and CarbonRe, will be operated via an internet website and will offer standard and customized insurance solutions for renewable energy projects in developing countries.
