UNEP Releases Foresight Report [viewed]

UNEP20 February 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report titled the “Foresight Report,” which outlines the findings of UNEP's Foresight Process aimed at identifying and ranking the most pressing emerging environmental issues. The report outlines 21 emerging issues and provides governments, civil society and business with scientific assessments to forge a forward-looking outcome at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

GEO-5 Summary Highlights Continued Deterioration of the Global Environment [viewed]

20 February 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the Global Environment Outlook-5 (GEO-5) Summary for Policy Makers, which was negotiated and endorsed by governments on 31 January 2012. The summary was released as a prelude to the full report, which will be released in June, in advance of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

UNEP Facilitates African Workshop on Technology Action Plans [viewed]

UNEP17 February 2012: In support of the Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) Project, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UNEP Risoe Centre facilitated a capacity building workshop for the African region to assist in developing Technology Action Plans (TAPs). At the workshop, the report titled "Overcoming Barriers to the Transfer and Diffusion of Climate Technologies" was introduced.

Climate and Clean Air Coalition Initiative Launched [viewed]

16 February 2012: The US, Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Mexico and Sweden, with the support of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), have launched the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants, which aims to reduce short-lived climate pollutants, carbon, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and methane.

16 February 2012: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) have released a report asserting that the challenges of resource constraints in the Asia-Pacific region are more serious than anywhere else, and proposing strategies for changing economic incentives to promote a green economy. The report was prepared as part of preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

Event: Sixth Caribbean Environment Forum and Exhibition (CEF 5) and 16th Annual Wider Caribbean Waste Management Conference (ReCaribe) [viewed]

These two events will be held simultaneously under the unified theme "The Green Economy: Challenges and Opportunities in Managing Health, Water, Waste, Land, Energy, Climate Change and our Natural Resources" to emphasize technologies, actions and strategies to address key environmental and health issues facing Caribbean small island developing States (SIDS). The CEF series on Caribbean health and environment has been organized by the Caribbean Community's (CARICOM) Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) biennially since 2000. The annual ReCaribe has been organized since 1995 by Clean Islands International (CII) to discuss waste management issues in the wider Caribbean region. The combined event is being co-sponsored by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (CAR/RCU), the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management project (IWCAM), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
