UN-REDD Launches Multiple Benefits Mapping Toolbox [viewed]

6 January 2012: The UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) has developed an ArcGIS toolbox for multiple benefits analyses under reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+).

Event: 18th Meeting of the Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean [viewed]

This biennial meeting of Environment Ministers is organized by the regional office of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The Preparatory Meeting of High-Level Experts will take place from 31 January-1 February 2012, and will be followed by the Ministerial Segment on 2-3 February. Among other things, the Ministers are to review the implementation of the Rio 1992 commitments and agreements, and deliberate on new, emerging and priority issues for the region and other issues on the road to the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The Ministers are also expected to discuss cooperation on sustainable consumption and production, environmental indicators, and the way forward in negotiating a regional framework agreement on atmospheric pollution that includes emissions of short-lived climate forcers (SLCFs) such as methane, black carbon, ozone precursors, and many hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

UNEP Announces Launch of China's HCFC Phase-Out Management Plan [viewed]

UNEP20 December 2011: The UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) has announced the launch of China's Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) under the Montreal Protocol. The US$270 million HPMP aims cut consumption of HCFCs in China by January 2015.

Eye on Earth Summit Launches Climate-related Initiatives [viewed]

GEF Project Builds Resilience to Climate Change and Disasters in West Rwanda [viewed]

UNEP Announces Closure of Carbon Neutral Network [viewed]

20 December 2011: The UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) has announced that Carbon Neutral Network (CN-Net) is set to close. The decision was taken after consultation with members of the web-based platform, and UNEP encourages members to approach other similar platforms to pursue their efforts at becoming climate neutral.

STAP Releases Report on Dead Zones [viewed]

November 2011: The Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP), which is administered by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and advises the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has released a report that stresses the need for the GEF to develop a faster response to the growing problem of dead zones in the world's coastal waters.
