UN-Backed Tara Oceans Mission Highlights Climate Change Impacts on Planktons [viewed]

9 February 2012: Tara Oceans, a mission carried out under the auspices of the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has arrived in New York, US, to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on oceans. The scientific expedition has been travelling the world's oceans for almost three years, investigating the effects of climate change on biodiversity and marine ecosystems, with a particular focus on plankton.

UNEP FI Newsletter Highlights Rio+20 Natural Capital Declaration [viewed]

UNEP FI8 February 2012: The UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) has released the February 2012 iisue of its newsletter, which includes articles on: the Natural Capital Declaration, intended to demonstrate the commitment of financial institutions at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20); UNEP FI's activities at the Durban Climate Change Conference; and the release of a report on insurance, drawing on lessons from the Southern Cape of South Africa.

Event: Fourth African Carbon Forum [viewed]

The fourth African Carbon Forum is being held under the theme "Promoting Green and Low Carbon Development in Africa". Organized by the Nairobi Framework Partners, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UNEP Risoe Centre (URC), the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank (WB) and the Africa Development Bank (AfDB), the Forum will host a series of plenary sessions, round tables and workshops to discuss topics related to the carbon market in Africa. Topics to be addressed include the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, plans of action and scaled-up mitigation actions, improving energy access in Africa and REDD+.

UN Missions Discuss UN's Environmental Sustainability Management [viewed]

2 February 2012: The UN Greening the Blue Campaign has announced that the UN has held its first meeting with diplomatic missions to the UN on the UN's environmental sustainability management. The meeting was designed to share lessons and best practices on sustainability initiatives, and included presentations by the Green Diplomacy programmes of Chile and the UK.

Third Intergovernmental Review Meeting on the GPA Adopts Manila Declaration [viewed]

27 January 2012: The Third Intergovernmental Review (IGR-3) of the Implementation of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities (GPA) concluded with the adoption of the Manila Declaration on Furthering the Implementation of the GPA, and of the GPA's Programme of Work 2012-1016. These outcomes will be forwarded for consideration and adoption by the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Governing Council at its 12th Special Session.
