5 December 2012: The UN Collaborative Programme on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (UN-REDD) has announced the contribution by Norway of US$30 million to support the second phase of the UN-REDD National Programme in Viet Nam.
6 December 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched the Africa Adaptation Knowledge Network (AAKNet), which will provide a platform to share knowledge, research and information on initiatives, as well as catalyze partnerships for climate change adaptation.
5 December 2012: A new partnership aiming to share knowledge and successful ideas for developing Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) was launched on the sidelines of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC in Doha, Qatar. The partnership will focus on: NAMAs in the context of national development; NAMA preparation for different sectors or technologies; and how to finance NAMAs.
26 November 2012: The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA) launched a publication, titled “The Art of Implementation: Gender Strategies Transforming National and Regional Climate Change Decision Making,” on the sidelines of the Doha Climate Change Conference. The publication showcases actions by women addressing mitigation or adaptation in 11 developing countries or regions.
6 December 2012: Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Maldives, the Netherlands and the Republic of Korea joined the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC) at a ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC in Doha, Qatar. The CCAC aims to catalyze action on reducing black carbon, methane, certain hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and other short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) to maximize agricultural, climate, energy and health benefits.
This workshop will be convened under the theme "Convening Adaptation Knowledge Networks and Platforms in Africa". The Africa Adaptation Knowledge Network is facilitated by UNEP under the umbrella of the Global Adaptation Network (GAN). It is based on the recognition that: Africa is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change; adaptation is a knowledge-intensive undertaking; and access to relevant and usable knowledge is an important prerequisite for successful adaptation efforts. The Network functions as a knowledge hub on adaptation, promoting cooperation and collaboration in seeking robust solutions to climate change impacts using experiences and lessons learnt from the implementation of independent actions in different locations. It also seeks to convene existing adaptation knowledge networks and platforms in Africa to open a window of opportunity for taking stock of the state of adaptation knowledge mobilization on the continent.
5 December 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre (URC) has published its December newsletter, featuring stories on its Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) project and electrification in Africa. It also spotlights initiatives and progress on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), including support by both the Africa Carbon Asset Development (ACAD) Partnership and UNEP Risø's Green Facility, capacity building in the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) region and loan schemes.
4 December 2012: Through the REDD+ Partnership, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), have launched an online database of REDD+ investments.
3 December 2012: The Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) launched the UN Alliance on Climate Change Education, Training and Public Awareness along with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
2 December 2012: The UNEP Risø Centre for Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development (URC) has launched NAMAcademy, a course programme to support policy makers from developing countries in understanding Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), and developing NAMA policies and programmes.
