World Water Day Celebrates Water Cooperation [viewed]
22 March 2013: This year's edition of World Water Day, celebrated on 22 March, was organized around the theme of water cooperation and within the framework of the International Year of Water Cooperation. The Day's celebrations were coordinated by UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), for UN-Water.
12 March 2013: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), in cooperation with the UN-Water Decade Programme on Capacity Development (UNW-DPC), have signed a framework of cooperation and launched a project on capacity-building in support of national drought management policies (NDMPs).
January 2013: The UN-Water Decade Programme on Advocacy and Communication (UNW-DPAC) has published its Bimonthly Publications Review, which presents the latest publications from UN agencies and programmes on issues related to water and sanitation from September through January 2012. These publications address a range of issues, such as climate change, child survival, city resilience and cultural diversity.
10 January 2012: The International Annual UN-Water Zaragoza Conference 2012/2013 reiterated that the challenges of climate change, poverty eradication, sustainable development and population growth require cooperation.
3 October 2012: UN-Water has published its 2011 Annual Report highlighting the year's achievements, including launching the UN Documentation Centre on Water and Sanitation (UN-DCWS), undertaking a survey of 130 countries on approaches to water management, and responding to urban water challenges through the World Water Day (WWD) campaign.
September 2012: The UN-Water Decade Programme on Advocacy and Communication (UNW-DPAC) published its bimonthly publications review, highlighting UN publications on water from June, July and August that address a variety of issues, including green accounting and sustainable development, water and food security, and water security.
18 May 2012: The fourth Africa Water Week was organized around the theme “Water for Growth in Africa,” and aimed to identify ways to reinforce and build on progress made to achieve the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets on water and sanitation, as well as Africa Water Vision 2025. The conference also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW).
22 March 2012: The 2012 edition of World Water Day, which is held every year on 22 March, focused on the theme "water and food security." The official UN-Water celebrations were coordinated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), who noted that a 50% reduction in food waste would save 1350 km3 of water per year.
12 March 2012: The 4th World Water Development Report (WWDR-4) was launched during the 6th World Water Forum. The report highlights the need to recognize water as a critical resource and underlines the global dimensions of its management, including climate change as a “central external driver” affecting water and demands for water use.
