UN-HABITAT Supports Youth Caravan to Durban [viewed]

14 November 2011: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) is supporting a caravan with 200 youth from Norway and Kenya, which started off from Nairobi, Kenya, and will end in Durban, South Africa, at the start of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The caravan aims to bring awareness about climate change issues to communities through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa.

UN-HABITAT and Partners Support Climate Resilience of Coastal Sri Lankan Cities [viewed]

4 November 2011: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), the University of Moratuwa, the Batticaloa Municipal Council (BMC) and the Negombo Municipal Council (NMC), has launched a project titled "Climate Resilient Action Plans for Coastal Urban Areas, Sri Lanka (CCSL)" aimed at enhancing the resilience to climate change of coastal Sri Lankan cities through disaster risk management.

UN Launches Guidelines for Eco-efficient and Socially Inclusive Cities [viewed]

October 2011: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), in partnership with the Urban Design Lab of the Earth Institute, Columbia University, have jointly released the "Guidelines for developing eco-efficient and socially inclusive infrastructure," which provide practical tools for city planners and decision makers to reform urban planning and infrastructure design according to the principles of eco-efficiency and social inclusiveness.

Event: World Habitat Day 2011: Cities and Climate Change [viewed]

World Habitat Day focuses on the state of cities and the basic right to adequate shelter. This year's theme emphasizes that climate change is a preeminent development challenge of the 21st century and that cities will bear the greatest impacts of disasters resulting from climate impact. The theme for the day also recognizes that cities have a great influence on climate change. The Global Celebration of the day will be organized by the Government of Mexico.
