UN Launches Guidelines for Eco-efficient and Socially Inclusive Cities [viewed]
October 2011: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), in partnership with the Urban Design Lab of the Earth Institute, Columbia University, have jointly released the "Guidelines for developing eco-efficient and socially inclusive infrastructure," which provide practical tools for city planners and decision makers to reform urban planning and infrastructure design according to the principles of eco-efficiency and social inclusiveness.

20 June 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Kuwait convened a workshop on "Advancing Disaster Risk Reduction and Urban Strategy in the Gulf States," which aimed to enhance stakeholder awareness and knowledge of disaster risk reduction (DRR) trends and policies in the context of urban planning, taking into account the risks and challenges faced by cities in a changing climate.
18 May 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has approved a joint UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT)/UN Environment Programme (UNEP) project that aims to promote energy efficiency measures in the building sector in East Africa in order to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
