UNGA Second Committee Considers Sustainable Urban Development, Strengthening UN-HABITAT [viewed]

1 November 2012: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee considered issues relevant to the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), including discussion of two reports, in a meeting on 1 November 2012, in New York, US. Joan Clos, Executive Director, UN-HABITAT, said the Third UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development (Habitat III) in 2016 should reinvigorate sustainable urban development commitments and produce a political outcome document.

Global Alliance Highlights Climate Change Mitigation Benefits of Clean Cookstoves [viewed]

October 2012: The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves has prepared a factsheet that identifies a positive correlation between the use of clean cookstoves and climate change mitigation, highlighting that, if well designed, clean cookstoves can reduce emissions associated with cooking with biomass.

20 September 2012: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) has launched a guide titled “Urban Planning for City Leaders” at an inaugural conference with the same name, held in London, UK. The guide aims to support urban planning good practice among local decision makers and leaders in developing and emerging economies.

Event: Seventh World Urban Forum [viewed]

The seventh session of the World Urban Forum (WUF) will be held in Medellin, Colombia, on the theme ‘Urban equity in development – Cities for life'. WUF 7 will include high-level dialogues on equity in urban development law; urban planning and design for social cohesion; basic services--local businesses for equitable cities; innovative financing instruments for local authorities; raising standards or urban resilience; and a safe city as a just and equitable city. It will also feature special sessions, round tables and business, gender and youth assemblies. WUF is an international forum exchanging views and experiences on urban challenges and opportunities. Participants include governments, international organisations, NGOs and other stakeholders. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) convenes the WUF every two years.

UNEP, UN-HABITAT, World Bank and Cities Alliance Launch K4C at World Urban Forum [viewed]

4 September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the World Bank and Cities Alliance launched the Knowledge Centre on Cities and Climate Change (K4C) at the 6th World Urban Forum in Naples, Italy. K4C is an interactive knowledge platform for sharing best practices and experiences on climate change projects in cities.

UN-HABITAT Supports Flood Risk Management in Uganda [viewed]

Event: Bogota Summit: Cities and Climate Change [viewed]

Organized by the Mayor of Bogota, with support from the Latin American Development Bank (CAF), the French Embassy, the French Development Agency (AFD), Avina Foundation, FINDETER bank, the El Tiempo news group, UN-HABITAT and others, this summit aims to bring together experts, finance organizations, international organizations and Latin American regional, national and municipal leaders to discuss concrete actions Latin American cities can take to mitigate and adapt to climate change and convert them into resilient, low-carbon cities. The conference will include a series of thematic debates and workshops on key issues, such as housing density, sustainable construction, energy efficiency, water services, risk management and mobility management.

UN-HABITAT Workshop Focuses on Climate Change and Decentralization in Asia and Pacific [viewed]

UNEP, World Bank and UN-HABITAT Welcome Pilot Protocol on Urban Emission Measurement and Reporting [viewed]

17 May 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Bank and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) have welcomed the launch of the pilot version of the Global Protocol for Community-scale Greenhouse Gas Emissions, designed to harmonize the emissions measurement and greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting process for cities.
