Event: Sustainable Biomass for Electricity Conference (SB4E) [viewed]

The Conference on Sustainable Biomass for Electricity (SB4E), organized by UN-Energy in cooperation with the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) and other partners, will consider the role of biomass technologies in decarbonizing the global energy system. Acknowledging the readily available and cost effective potential for emission reductions that could be achieved through the large-scale deployment of sustainable biomass for electricity production, the SB4E Conference will provide an opportunity for governments, international organizations and the private sector to share knowledge, lessons, best practices and experiences and to join efforts towards decarbonizing electricity generation. The GBEP grew out of the 2005 Gleneagles G8 Plan of Action and was launched during the Ministerial Segment of the 14th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 14) in New York, on 11 May 2006. As of January 2012, GBEP Partners include the following 23 countries and 12 international organizations and institutions: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Fiji, France, Germany, Ghana, Italy, Japan, Mauritania, Mexico, Netherlands, Paraguay, Russian Federation, Spain, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, UK, US, European Commission, FAO, IDB, IEA, UNCTAD, UN/DESA, UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO, UN Foundation, World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE) and European Biomass Industry Association (EUBIA).

Event: Energy for All: Financing Access for the Poor [viewed]

The Oslo Energy for All 2011 high-level conference is co-organized by Norway and the International Energy Agency (IEA), and aims to explore possible ways of financing access to energy for the 1.4 billion people without access to electricity and 2.5 billion people who still use traditional biomass for cooking. Five countries from the South - Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Liberia and South Africa – have been invited to be organizing partners. High-level participants will include Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon Magnus, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Director-General Kandeh Yumkella. Registration is by invitation only.

World Bank Hosts High-Level Event on Low Emissions Development [viewed]

World Bank13 July 2011: The World Bank invited senior policy makers and opinion leaders from around the world to a High-Level Dialogue on Low Emissions Development Policy Implementation. During the day-long event, speakers identified poverty and climate change are the two defining challenges of this century, warning against the risk of reversing any gains on poverty if climate change is not addressed.

Event: UN Private Sector Forum: Access to Energy For All [viewed]

This high-level forum is being organized by the UN Global Compact, UN-Energy and other UN Agencies, funds and programmes, and will focus on the theme of Sustainable Energy for All. The forum will bring together Heads of State attending the UN General Assembly and over 300 CEOs of leading companies in the sector. Hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Private Sector Forum will feature high-level roundtable discussions among business, government, civil society and UN leaders. It is designed to maximize interaction, increase understanding of efforts underway, and generate a range of commitments to action around the Sustainable Energy for All goals.
