Kampala Declaration Stresses Cross-Regional Cooperation on Climate Services [viewed]

WMO23 April 2015: During a Workshop on Improving Climate Services for Farmers in Africa and South Asia, farmers and experts adopted the Kampala Declaration on promoting cross-regional cooperation on sharing and using knowledge on climate products and services. The Declaration came about because of the increased recognition that significant progress has been made in weather and climate forecasting through improved data availability and advances in numerical modeling.

UNDP Climate Change Innovation Camp Focuses on Urban Resilience [viewed]

UNDP19 April 2015: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) in the former Yugoslav Republic (fYR) of Macedonia hosted a Climate Change Innovation Camp as the culmination of the country's first nationwide climate change campaign. During the three-day camp, the ten finalists in the campaign pitched their ideas, which focused on reducing human impact on the climate and increasing urban resilience. The winning two teams will receive US$10,000 to realize their ideas.

Event: Climate Vulnerable Forum Regional Meeting for Sub-Saharan Africa [viewed]

The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) regional meeting for Sub-Saharan Africa will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 7-8 May 2015. Hosted by Ethiopia, with support from the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the two-day meeting will gather government policymakers from a wide range of African countries. The meeting aims to identify and promote headline climate change policy priorities for vulnerable developing countries of the region.

Montreal Protocol OEWG 35 Agrees to Work Intersessionally on HFC Management [viewed]

iisdrrs_owg3524 April 2015: The 35th meeting of the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG 35) of the parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer concluded with Parties' agreement to continue to work intersessionally in an informal manner to study the feasibility and ways of managing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). This work will aim to initiate contact group discussions on the feasibility and ways of managing HFCs, at OEWG 36.

Global Soil Week 2015: Healthy Soils and Land Justice Underpin Transformation to Sustainability [viewed]

global_soil_week24 April 2015: “A transformation towards sustainable soil management is possible if all actors are integrated in the search for solutions.” This statement was among concluding remarks made by Klaus Töpfer, Executive Director, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) and Chair of the Third Global Soil Week. Töpfer welcomed the contribution of the Secretariats of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), noting “this sends a strong signal” of the growing shift from silos towards "a systems approach” in addressing multiple agendas.

Task Force Estimates US$320 Billion/Year Needed for China's Environmental Targets [viewed]

International Mother Earth Day Celebrated around the World [viewed]

ban_ki_moon_concert22 April 2015: In celebration of Earth Day, multilateral institutions and organizations worldwide held public concerts and forums, revealed a 'forest pavilion,' and released special newsletters and statements, among many other commemorative activities. The UN kicked off its Earth Day events with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon speaking at the Global Citizen Earth Day Concert on 18 April in Washington DC, US, where he told the crowd, "Take your passion and compassion and build a better, sustainable world."
