IFAD Builds Adaptation Capacity of Smallholders [viewed]

2014 One of Hottest Years on Record, Says WMO [viewed]

WMO3 December 2014: 2014 is turning out to be one of the hottest years, if not the hottest year, on record, according to preliminary estimates by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). WMO attributes the high temperatures to record high sea surface temperatures, which contributed to heavy rainfall and floods in many countries and extreme drought in others. The WMO's provisional statement of the ‘Status of the Global Climate in 2014' is intended to inform the UN Climate Change Conference taking place in Lima, Peru.

Event: Second UN Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Forum [viewed]

The second annual Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Forum will continue the momentum from the launch of the UN Decade of SE4ALL (2014-2024) at the first annual Forum, which took place in June 2014. The Forums were envisioned as annual events that will provide benchmarks for progress during the Decade. UN Member States will use the global platform as an opportunity to "take stock and push forward". The event is expected to include governments, civil society and the initiative's partner organizations, who will present their work, form partnerships and commit to further action. The Forum will also facilitate coordinating input from SE4ALL to other processes, such as climate change negotiations and the post-2015 development agenda. The SE4ALL initiative aims, by 2030, to ensure universal energy access to modern energy services, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

UN-REDD Newsletter Highlights Discussions on REDD+ Post-2015 Vision [viewed]

unredd2 December 2014: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) has released the December 2014 edition of its newsletter highlighting planned discussions on the post-2015 vision for REDD+ and UN-REDD. High-level discussions will be held with UN agencies, national governments and indigenous peoples at the margins of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC.

WMO Releases 'Weather Reports from the Future' for Lima Climate Change Conference [viewed]

WMO1 December 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has invited television weather presenters from around the world to “imagine a weather report from the year 2050.” While they will present possible scenarios, not true forecasts, the reports are based on the most up-to-date climate science and paint a picture of what life could possibly be like if the planet continues to warm.

AfDB, World Bank Partner to Improve Hydromet Services in Africa [viewed]

AfDB27 November 2014: The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank held a seminar on improving Africa's hydrological and meteorological systems in order to capture weather and climate data and disseminate information to assist in development planning. Discussions emphasized the critical role of hydrometeorological services in providing information to support economic development and build resilience in many sectors in Africa, including disaster risk reduction and management, water, agriculture, transport, energy, public health and aviation safety and security.
