Event: 6th Session of the Africa Regional Platform and 5th High-Level Meeting of Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

The 6th Session of the African Regional Platform and the 5th High-Level Meeting of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) will: review progress made domestically in implementing the Sendai Framework for DRR; discuss and agree on follow-up actions to accelerate implementation; and focus on aligning the Programme of Action for implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy with the Sendai Framework. Participants will discuss: monitoring and reviewing progress in implementation; opportunities for learning and exchanging experiences, successes and challenges in applying disaster risk management (DRM) of risk knowledge; progress made on preparedness, recovery and reconstruction under the 'build-back- better' approach; and risk-informed development. Outcomes will include: the Africa Programme of Action to implement the Sendai Framework in Africa; the Mauritius Declaration on implementation of the Africa Programme of Action; and an 'Africa Position' that will be presented at the 5th session of the Global Platform for DRR, which will convene from 22-26 May 2017, in Cancun, Mexico. Outcomes will also be submitted to the African Union (AU) Policy Organs for consideration and adoption during the AU Summit in January 2017. This meeting will also commemorate the first-ever World Tsunami Awareness Day. Representatives of African countries, stakeholder groups and development and humanitarian partners will attend the meeting. This event is being organized by the AU Commission, with support from the UN Office for DRR (UNISDR), and hosted by the Government Mauritius with support from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat.

With climate change likely intensifying the effects of this year's El Niño, many parts of the world are experiencing longer droughts, more frequent floods and increasingly violent storms. This can have a devastating effect on poor and vulnerable households, underlying the critical role that climate adaptation efforts play in sustaining livelihoods. Ethiopia is facing its worst drought in 50 years. Two successive rainy seasons have failed, leaving up to ten million people in need of aid. As of May 2016, humanitarian funding requirements have increased to more than US$1.5 billion.

Event: Informal Negotiations on Habitat III Outcome Document [viewed]

Informal negotiations on the 'Surabaya Draft of New Urban Agenda' will take place in September 2016. The current draft is the result of the negotiations at the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the Habitat III Conference (PrepCom 3), held in Surabaya, Indonesia, from 25–27 July 2016. Habitat III is expected to adopt the New Urban Agenda in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016.

Event: PAGE High-level Policy Dialogue [viewed]

The Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) will hold a High-level Policy Dialogue, with a focus on job creation and social inclusion, in the context of climate change and resource scarcity. The context for this discussion is the International Labour Organization's (ILO) Future of Work Initiative, and the recently adopted ILO Guidelines for a Just Transition. The Dialogue is expected to contribute to the identification of policy instruments and practical tools to help countries at all levels of development manage the transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient economies, in line with their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Dialogue will inaugurate PAGE's second global Academy on the Green Economy, from 3-15 October.

Event: World Green Economy Summit (WGES) 2016 [viewed]

The third annual World Green Economy Summit (WGES) will focus on the theme, 'Driving the Global Green Economy'. The WGES is an initiative by the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority and is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President Prime Minister of UAE and The Ruler of Dubai and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, in cooperation with World Climate Ltd and WETEX. The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) are institutional partners for WGES 2016. The programme will incorporate plenary sessions, breakout sessions and a expert-led presentations, addressing topics including: Green Finance; Solar Energy; Transforming cities through happy citizens; Post Paris Agreement on climate change / Road to UNFCCC COP22 in Marrakech; Thought Leadership for the Green Economy; and Public Private Partnerships.

Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: Heat-Related Deaths to Increase, Children and the Poor Most Climate Vulnerable [viewed]

adaptation and loss update8 August 2016: As reports of new temperature extremes exceeding the 50°C mark continue to come in, further climate change-related concerns have been voiced by the UN community. The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has expressed concern over a potential rise in deaths precipitated by heat. The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank have cautioned that children and the world's poor are among those disproportionately affected by climate change. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and others have emphasized climate change impacts on food security. On the policy side, the Adaptation Committee (AC) and the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Expert Group (LEG) have issued a call for submissions from Parties and stakeholders on their Paris mandates.

City Initiatives Contribute to SDG 11 [viewed]

unhabitat_idb_unce_itu1 August 2016: The UN and partners have developed and launched programmes and initiatives to make cities smarter and more sustainable, including the United for Smart Sustainable Cities Initiative (U4SSC) and a pilot project to monitor urban-environment related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) launched a guide to promote smart city management. These actions aim to contribute to SDG 11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable).

Mitigation Update: Cities Intensify Climate Action; IMO, ICAO Take Steps to Enable Mitigation Policies [viewed]

The 'State of the Climate in 2015' report published in the Bulletin of the AMS notes the combined effect of long-term global warming and a very strong El Niño effect, and reports record-high sea levels, upper ocean heat content, global sea surface temperatures, global surface temperatures, and major greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations.

Event: September 2016 CCAC Working Group Meeting [viewed]

This Working Group Meeting of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) will convene at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, on 20-21 September 2016. The focus of this Working Group meeting will be on learning more about the progress and impact of the CCAC initiatives through interactive sessions. It will also involve discussion and agreement on changes to the CCAC partnership and governance following the work of the Task Team, including changes to streamline the funding process. Preparations for the High Level Assembly (HLA) in Marrakesh, Morocco, on the margins of the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC will also be discussed.

Multilateral Initiatives Advance Renewable Energy, Efficiency in the Caribbean, Asia [viewed]

These initiatives, as emphasized by their sponsors, are important for achieving the climate objectives in the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG) related to clean energy and energy access.
