22 August 2008: A report commissioned by the UN Office for
the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and CARE International finds
that climate change greatly complicates, and could undermine, efforts to manage
the challenges presented by droughts, floods and cyclones. The study identifies
the most likely humanitarian implications of climate change for the next 20-30
21 August 2008: The first phase of consultations on a
Strategic Framework on Climate Change and Development for the World Bank Group
(WBG) has concluded with the release of a draft document entitled “Development
and Climate Change - A Strategic Framework for the World Bank Group.” The
document will be finalized, taking into consideration comments received through
15 September 2008, and submitted to the Board of Directors, on 23 September
2008, and to the Development Committee, during the 2008 IMF/World Bank Group
Annual Meeting in October 2008.
August 2008: The International Civil Aviation Organization
(ICAO) has made a written submission to the third Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term
Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), which is taking place in
Accra, Ghana, from 21-27 August 2008. The submission includes a presentation of
ICAO's past and current work in reducing emissions from aircrafts and the
current international legal regime.
August 2008: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is organizing, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment of Jordan, an “Eco-cities Forum,” which will take place from 18-20 October 2008, at the Dead Sea in Jordan. The Forum aims to promote awareness, best practices, investment opportunities and technology transfer in the environmental sector in Jordan as well as among municipalities in the Mediterranean region.
18 August 2008: Toyota Motor Europe has become the first car manufacturer to join the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Climate Neutral Network.
August 2008: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
and the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) have announced a workshop on
Harvested Wood Products in the Context of Climate Change, to be held from 9-10
September 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland.
August 2008: The Global Partnership Initiative for Plant Breeding Capacity Building (GIPB), a platform and partnership of public, private and civil society institutions hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the FAO Inter-Departmental Working Group on Bioenergy, has called for expanded, up-to-date information on genetic resources and breeding of selected underutilized species, together with detailed analysis of their potential as bioenergy crops adaptable to sustainable smallholder production systems.
12 August 2008: In a speech delivered during the opening of the Food and Agriculture Organization/International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Symposium on Induced Mutations in Plants, Werner Burkart, IAEA
Deputy Director General, noted that in 2008, the international community became conscience of the links between climate change, the food and energy crises and hunger.
12 August 2008: On the occasion of International Youth Day,
celebrated on 12 August, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Somalia Deputy
Representative, Hannan Sulieman, underscored the role young people can play in
helping to tackle climate change.
9 August 2008: In an opinion piece, published in the Hindu,
Vinod Thomas, Director General of the World Bank's Independent Evaluation
Group, underscores the increased frequency of natural disasters, their effect
on development, and the need for policy makers to recognize this growing threat
