24 July 2008: PostEurop, a
Restricted Union representing 48 European public postal operators, has agreed
to form a joint technical committee with the Universal Postal Union's (UPU)
Sustainable Development Project Group, which will establish measures to reduce the
sector's carbon dioxide emissions.
22 July 2008: The Independent Evaluation Group, an
independent unit within the World Bank that reports directly to the Bank's
Board of Executive Directors, has released its report evaluating
the effectiveness of World Bank Group (WBG) support to the environment from
1990 to 2007.
23 July 2008: In an editorial published in the Financial Times, Mohamed ElBaradei, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), calls for the creation of an international organization on energy. In the article, which he indicates represents his personal views, ElBaradei describes the current energy crisis, stressing the need for environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels and coordinated action on energy and
related issues, including climate change.
21 July 2008:
The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Climate Neutral Network (CN Net)
announced that two Norwegian music festivals have joined the international
fight against climate change. The two festivals are the first music events to
sign on to CNNet, which aims to federate solutions and actions to realize a
low, even zero pollution, world.
21 July 2008: Fourteen
developing countries - Bolivia, Costa Rica, the Democratic Republic of Congo,
Gabon, Ghana, Guyana, Kenya, Lao PDR, Liberia, Madagascar Mexico, Nepal,
Panama, and Vietnam - will be beneficiaries of funding from the Forest Carbon
Partnership Facility (FCPF), launched at the Bali climate negotiations. The
FCPF partners donor countries, the World Bank, and developing countries in an
effort to build capacity for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest
degradation.

The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) continued the General Segment of
its Substantive Session with a panel discussion on “An inclusive and coherent approach to climate
change: The role of the UN system,” which was chaired by Jean-Marc Hoscheit (Luxembourg), Vice-President of
the Council. Noting the urgency of addressing the threat of climate change and
the need for system-wide action, he explained that the ECOSOC's discussion was
centered on how the UN is coordinating its response to
the post-Bali road map of negotiations.

July 2008: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has announced the
development of a new database on the world's soils. This database seeks to
improve knowledge of current and future land productivity, as well as the
carbon storage and carbon sequestration potential of the world's soils. Using
the database, the FAO has also produced a global Carbon Gap Map, which allows
for the identification of areas where soil carbon storage is greatest and the
physical potential for billions of tons of additional carbon to be sequestrated
in degraded soils.
