Event: World Habitat Day 2010: Better City, Better Life [viewed]

The Global Observance of the 2010 World Habitat Day will be held at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. As part of the celebration, a special meeting on the ‘Livable City in a Harmonious Society' will be held. The meeting is one of the six major discussions happening during this week on key urban topics including sustainability, urban development, the environment, economy, cultural heritage, science and innovation. As part of the celebrations worldwide, UN-HABITAT, in partnership with the National Institute for Disaster Management of Mozambique (INGC), is holding a special event in the areas where floods were caused by heavy rains in recent years in Mutarara village, located in the central province of Tete, Mozambique. The event will screen two films: one titled ‘The Change,' on the causes, effects and adaptation measures to cope with climate change; and a second titled ‘The River,' which features how people living near the Limpopo river in the southern part of the country have adapted to live with floods.

Event: ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2010 [viewed]

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference, the top policy making body of the ITU, is held every four years and sets the ITU's policy, financial planning and strategic goals. This year's Conference will consider various issues, including: ITU's strategic plan and financial plan for 2012-2015; cybersecurity; and the enhanced use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in mitigating climate change and delivering emergency communication in the wake of natural disasters. In addition, the Conference will include four side event sessions featuring debates between experts from government and industry, on: roadblocks to ‘broadband inclusion for all;' enabling a low-carbon future: the key role of ICTs to address climate change; accessible ICTs for persons with disabilities; and cybersecurity.

Event: Regional Forum to Update the Strategic Action Programme on Lake Tanganyika [viewed]

The forum is organized by the Secretariat of the Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA), and attended by experts in environmental management and fisheries, government officials of the riparian countries Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia, as well as professionals from a range of local, regional and international research institutes and NGOs, including ICRAF, IUCN, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the WWF. Participants will update the Strategic Action Programme in recognition of new threats, such as climate change and biological invasions, that have emerged since its adoption.

UNFCCC Publishes WHO AWG-LCA Submission [viewed]

30 September 2010: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a submission (FCCC/AWGLCA/2010/MISC.7) from the World Health Organization (WHO) under ideas and proposals on the elements contained in paragraph 1 of the Bali Action Plan.

UNDP Contributes to Recovery Efforts in Pakistan [viewed]

29 September 2010: As part of the recovery efforts from the monsoon floods in Pakistan, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) will build approximately 5,000 disaster-resistant and energy efficient houses for those left homeless in the coastal area of Thatta, where 86% of the population lives below the poverty line.

Equator Prize Ceremony Held at MDG Summit [viewed]

Event: Climate Change and Loss of Nature's Diversity: New Actions and Alliances in Response to Key Global Challenges 2010 [viewed]

This 2010 edition of the annual Fridtjof Nansen Memorial Lecture, hosted by the UN University (UNU), will be delivered by Erik Solheim, former Norwegian Minister of the Environment and International Development. It will focus on the impact of climate change on biodiversity loss, as well as the need for alliances and partnerships to address these global challenges.

GEO-5 Geneva Consultations Identify European Priorities [viewed]
