21 September 2008: On the occasion of the 16th Clean Up the
World Weekend, which was celebrated from 19-21 September 2008 under the theme
“Start today-Save tomorrow-Clean Up Our Climate,” Google and Clean Up the World
launched a website that allows groups to share information about themselves and
the activities they undertook as part of the Clean Up the World Weekend.
18 September 2008: Speaking at the Financial Times-World Energy Council's Energy Leaders Summit, Ad Melkert, UN Under-Secretary General and Associate Administrator of the UN Development Programme, stated that access to affordable and sustainable energy services stands as a roadblock for
millions in Africa, Asia and Central and South America to escape poverty.
September 2008: The 2008 International Day for Disaster
Reduction, celebrated on 8 October, will focus on making hospitals and health
facilities safe from disaster. The Day will be part of the UN International
Strategy for Disaster Reduction's (UN/ISDR) new World Disaster Reduction
Campaign 2008-2009: Hospitals Safe from Disasters.
18 September 2008: The UN Secretary-General has appointed
Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana, and Srgjan Kerim, outgoing
President of the UN General Assembly, as Special Envoys on climate change.
18 September 2008: On the eve of the opening of the 63rd
session of the UN General Assembly, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) released a briefing paper on the impact of high food prices on hunger,
which states that rising food prices pushed 75 million more people into hunger
and threatens efforts to realize the goal of halving the number of those in
hunger by 2015. The paper will inform a high-level event on the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs), to be held on 25 September.
September 2008: The Tenth Global Meeting of the Regional
Seas Conventions and Action Plans will take place in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from
25-27 November 2008.
17 September 2008: The World Meteorological Organization
(WMO) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have agreed
to increase their cooperation in the development of international standards
related to meteorological and hydrological data, products and services.
16 September 2008: International Day for the Preservation of
the Ozone Layer was celebrated on 16 September 2008, with the theme "Montreal
Protocol – Global partnership for global benefits." In the UN Secretary-General's message
recognizing the day, Ban Ki-moon emphasized that the success of the Protocol
demonstrates that environmental protection can be sustained through economic
downturns, and encouraged governments to look for synergies among multilateral
environmental agreements as the Parties to the Protocol did when deciding to
accelerate the phase-out of hydrochlorofluorocarbons.
16 September 2008: Marking International Day for the
Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which was celebrated on 16 September 2008, the
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released data showing that the ozone
hole is already larger in 2008 than it was in 2007, emphasized that the need
for continued ozone measurements to monitor the ozone hole, and highlighted the
Montreal Protocol's climate benefits.
15 September 2008: Leaders of the Rome-based UN agencies,
the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), World Food Programme
(WFP) and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), together with
the World Bank, presented a common statement to the European Parliament's
Development Committee, urging it to take the lead in providing assistance to
help farmers cope with surging food and commodity prices.
