Event: Second Africa Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

This meeting is being organized by the African Union Commission, the Government of Kenya and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), in collaboration with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) of the World Bank. This conference will be held parallel to the First Conference of Ministers responsible for meteorology in Africa, organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in conjunction with the African Union Commission.

The conference on disaster risk reduction and its technical segment will aim to: discuss and adopt the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015); define a regional mechanism and the resources to coordinate, support and monitor the implementation of the Africa Strategy and Programme of Action for disaster risk reduction (2006-2010); and link the outcomes of UNFCCC COP 15 to the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015).

Event: First Workshop on Climate Induced Migration in the Middle East and North Africa [viewed]

This workshop is organized by the World Bank and the Agence Française de Développement, in partnership with the UN University-Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The workshop will provide a forum for knowledge sharing of current research on climate induced migration and displacement carried out in the Middle East and North Africa region. Event: 35th Session of the FAO European Forestry Commission [viewed]

The European Forestry Commission is one of six Regional Forestry Commissions established by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to provide a policy and technical forum for countries to discuss and address forest-related issues on a regional basis. The main topics for discussion during this session will be: climate change and forests; forests and energy; forests and water; and regional cooperation on forests.

Event: Geneva Trade and Biodiversity Day [viewed]

This event is co-organized by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). It will focus on the intersection between trade and biodiversity policy in the promotion of sustainable development. Participants will also explore the links between trade policy and biodiversity as it relates to sectoral themes, including agriculture, intellectual property, fisheries and climate change.

Adaptation Fund Issues First Call for Project Proposals [viewed]

8 April 2010: The Adaptation Fund has issued its first call for project and programme proposals to support adaptation in developing countries. The call follows the decision of the Adaptation Fund Board at its ninth meeting in late March 2010, by which it accredited the first agencies to manage grants from the Adaptation Fund.

Human Rights Council Includes Climate Change in Agenda for 2010 Social Forum [viewed]

25 March 2010: The 13th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which met from 1-26 March 2010, in Geneva, Switzerland, concluded with the adoption of 28 resolutions, including one on the organization of the Social Forum (A/HRC/13/L.16).

Event: MAB-Pro-Natura Congo Basin Biosphere Bio-Carbon Forum and Training Seminar [viewed]

This UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seminar will train biosphere reserve managers and MAB partners in bio-carbon project design and management. It will bring together regional stakeholders to discuss concrete steps toward strengthening the biosphere reserve network in Central Africa and using Congo Basin biosphere reserves as pilot sites to combat deforestation, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable development through bio-carbon modalities.

7 April 2010: The 2010 edition of World Health Day was celebrated on 7 April around the theme "Urbanization: a challenge for public health." To mark the Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Commonwealth Secretariat released a couple of publications that underline linkages between urban health and climate change.

UN-REDD Workshop Held in Indonesia [viewed]

1 April 2010: The implementation of UN-REDD activities in Indonesia was officially launched at the UN-REDD Inception Workshop, held from 30-31 March 2010, in Jakarta, Indonesia. Representatives of various ministries, provincial governments, and international and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) discussed reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) in Indonesia and the UN Programme's activities.
