UNEP Makes Business Case for Eco-innovation [viewed]

UNEP5 November 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a publication, titled ‘The Business Case for Eco-Innovation,' which is part of UNEP's Eco-innovation Project. According to the publication, companies are facing growing market and regulatory pressures in the face of declining resources and environmental degradation, extreme weather events are impacting on business profitability, and global water demand is expected to exceed supply by 40% within 20 years.

Event: Climate Justice: Addressing the Global Challenge and Scotland's Contribution [viewed]

This international roundtable conference, organized by CIFAL Scotland, a UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)-affiliated training center for Northern Europe, will provide a space for discussing the challenges of climate change, climate justice as a human right, and Scotland's contribution to climate justice. In 2012, the Scottish government launched the 'Climate Justice Fund,' the value of which was doubled to £6 million in 2013. The Fund currently supports projects in Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia in the areas of water and food security, and action against climate change impacts, such as floods, droughts and severe weather. The one-day conference will include opening remarks by UNITAR representatives, a keynote speech by Humza Yousaf, Minister for External Affairs and International Development of the Scottish Government, and a panel discussion.

Event: Clinic on Skills Development for Climate Policy and Public Finance [viewed]

This half-day briefing, focusing on skills development for climate policy and public finance, is organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Climate Change Programme (CPP). The Programme provides capacity-development services for individuals and training institutions in developing countries on implementing the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and advancing green and climate-resilient development.

Event: UN-REDD Thirteenth Policy Board Meeting [viewed]

The thirteenth UN-REDD Programme Policy Board meeting will be held in Arusha, Tanzania, from 3-7 November 2014. The itinerary for the meeting includes a field visit on 3 November, a joint knowledge sharing day with the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) on 4 November, a UN-REDD Programme Information Sharing Day on 5 November and the official Policy Board meeting, from 6-7 November.

CCAC Agriculture Initiative Expands to Methane Emissions from Rice [viewed]

ccac-ccaf-ciat-irri31 October 2014: A research effort to reduce methane emissions from rice cultivation in Viet Nam, Bangladesh and Colombia has been launched under the Agriculture Initiative of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC). Three international research institutions, working together with rice farmers, policy makers and other partners, expect to reduce emissions by 30-50% by using an innovative irrigation method.

ICAO Asia-Pacific Seminars Discuss Environmental and Climate Action [viewed]

Icao30 October 2014: The Environment Branch of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) held two environmental capacity-building seminars for the Asia and Pacific (APAC) Region. The regional seminars on ‘International Aviation and Environment' and 'States' Action Plans' were held from 28-29 and 29-30 October, respectively, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and were part of ICAO's support activities to its member States in their efforts to take action on aviation and climate change.

Event: Third Session of the Multi-year Expert Meeting on Transport, Trade Logistics and Trade Facilitation [viewed]

The third session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Multi-year Expert Meeting on Transport, Trade Logistics and Trade Facilitation will convene from 24-26 November, under the theme 'Small Island Developing States (SIDS): Transport and Trade Logistics Challenges'. The meeting will focus on SIDS-specific transport-related challenges in light of the outcome of the third International Conference on SIDS, held in September 2014 in Apia, Samoa. Issues to be addressed will include: transport and trade logistics challenges; interlinkages between transport and trade; disaster risks, management and recovery; impacts of climate change on transport infrastructure and related adaption needs; financing as an enabling factor; priority action areas and response measures; and the role of partnerships, partners and collaboration mechanisms. The meeting will be open to participants from government, industry and academia nominated by UNCTAD member states, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), and UNCTAD-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
