24 April 2013: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) signed an agreement of cooperation with the International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization (IESCO) on the sidelines to the 24th Session of the UN-HABITAT Governing Council. The agreement will support urban youth initiatives, including climate change adaptation activities, youth empowerment and urban ecological safety programmes.
26 April 2013: The first comprehensive assessment of soils across the African continent has been released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the European Commission, the African Union (AU) and other international partners.
2 May 2013: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released its Statement on the Status of the Global Climate for 2012, which indicates that 2012 is among the ten previous years as one of the warmest on record. This is the ninth warmest year since records began in 1850 and the 27th consecutive year that global land and ocean temperatures were above the 1961–1990 average, with the years 2001–2012 all among the top 13 warmest years on record.
30 April 2013: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) has released a publication, titled ‘Legal Analysis of Cross-cutting Issues for REDD+ Implementation: Lessons Learned from Mexico, Viet Nam and Zambia.' The purpose of the report is to identify key legal issues impacting REDD+ and highlight lessons learned and messages from legal reform and development in the case study countries.
May 2013: Highlighting the risks posed by climate change to biodiversity, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a study that documents climate-induced changes to ecosystems and measures to promote adaptation.
25 April 2013: UNEP Risø Centre, the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have released a report titled 'National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Baseline Scenarios: Learning from Experiences of Developing Countries.'
30 April 2013: The World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) is calling for public comments on its report, titled “Background for a Framework of Ethical Principles and Responsibilities for Climate Change Policies.” COMSET is an advisory body of independent experts for the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The Eighth International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Symposium on Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), the Environment and Climate Change will convene from 6-7 May 2013 in Turin, Italy. The symposium's theme is “Smart Sustainable Cities” and will bring together experts to discuss the latest initiatives in the development of smart cities, with a view to determining the best path forward in leveraging ICTs to enhance cities' environmental sustainability. Agenda items include: energy efficiency, clean power and the smart grid as engines for sustainable urban growth; integrated ICT solutions for smart sustainable cities and empowered citizens; ICTs and climate monitoring; and climate change adaptation and emergency telecommunications in urban areas. The symposium is organized by ITU in partnership with the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, will be hosted by Telecom Italia at its innovation center. This symposium will be held in conjunction with the first meeting of the new Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities, on 8 May, and a Workshop on Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields, on 9 May.
29 April 2013: The April edition of the newsletter of the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) highlights progress on the national REDD+ Readiness Roadmap in Bangladesh and the establishment of a national REDD+ taskforce in Cambodia.
26 April 2013: The Commission des Forets d'Afrique Centrale (COMIFAC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) convened a regional workshop to plan for the implementation of national forest monitoring in the Congo Basin.
