UAE, UNEP FI Hold Sixth National Green Economy Conference [viewed]

uae_unep25 May 2015: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) held its sixth national Green Economy Annual Conference in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Finance Initiative (FI). The Conference highlighted the UAE Government's green economy initiatives, including its national 'State of Green Economy' report, which was launched at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January 2015.

WMO Congress Agrees on Post-2015 Priorities, Appoints New Secretary-General [viewed]

WMO12 June 2015: The 17th session of the World Meteorological Congress agreed on priorities for 2016-2019, adopting a new strategic plan and related budget. The Congress also appointed a new Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud, who will remain ‘Secretary-General emeritus,' reiterated that high-impact weather and climate extremes are likely to occur with greater frequency and intensity due to climate change, noting that while a window of opportunity still exists “to act and prevent irreversible damage,” it is closing fast.

The report examines actions by cities, companies and sectors that could complement government efforts on climate change mitigation and save up to 1.8 gigatonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2e) by 2020.

G7 Schloss Elmau Declaration Affirms Copenhagen Accord on US$100 Billion for Climate [viewed]

G7 Germany8 June 2015: G7 leaders issued a wide-ranging outcome document, the Schloss Elmau Declaration, at the close of their two-day meeting in Germany, in which they affirmed the 2009 Copenhagen Accord agreement to raise US$100 billion in annual climate financing from public and private sources, committed to make the Green Climate Fund fully operational in 2015, and promised action on the post-2015 sustainable development goals (SDGs), resource efficiency, marine litter and renewable energy.
