UNITAR Supports Municipalities in Post-2015 DRR [viewed]

Unitar13 January 2015: The UN Institute for Training and Research's (UNITAR) Decentralized Cooperation Programme together with the Municipality of Santa Tecla in El Salvador hosted a conference on ‘The Role of Municipalities in the Post-2015 Hyogo Framework for Action on Disaster Risk Reduction,' bringing together about 150 local government officials and municipal council members from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru and the Dominican Republic to exchange best practices to plan for disasters and reduce risks.

UNFF Launches Website to Support Financing for SFM [viewed]

UnffJanuary 2015: The UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) launched a website to support the ongoing Facilitative Process adopted to assist developing countries in identifying and accessing financing for sustainable forest management (SFM). The Facilitative Process is based on the tenants of a bottom-up approach that takes into account the multiple uses and values of forests as well as the range of ecosystem services they provide.

Event: Ninth World Urban Forum [viewed]

The ninth World Urban Forum (WUF9), convened by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), will bring together thousands of stakeholders to share practices and knowledge on how cities are built, planned and managed. WUF9 participants will include representatives of: national, regional and local governments; non-governmental organizations; community-based organizations; research institutions and academies; the private sector; development finance institutions; foundations; the media; and UN organizations and other international agencies. The WUF's key objectives include: advocating for and raising awareness on sustainable urban development; advancing knowledge on sustainable urbanization through debates, and exchange of experiences and best practices; and coordinating and cooperating within and between different constituencies towards advancing and implementing the Habitat Agenda. WUF is the biggest major international event to address human settlements, including rapid urbanization and its impact on cities, communities, economies, climate change and policies. It meets every two years, and participation has increased to around 22,000 attendees from all over the world. WUF9 will be the first Forum to meet after the post-2015 development agenda process and the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III in 2016.

Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs Calls for Ensuring Means of Implementation in Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

UNEP16 January 2015: Addressing the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt called for the post-2015 development agenda to be supported by “clear means of implementation (MOI) that can guarantee success.” Giving a special address to the CPR's 129th Session, Sameh Shoukry cautioned against agreements with commitments that cannot be implemented, and recommended a post-2015 process that completes the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and draws lessons learned from their implementation.

WCRP Launches Polar Challenge [viewed]

WCRPlogo16 January 2015: The World Climate Research Program (WCRP) is launching a Polar Challenge to reward the first team able to send an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for a 2,000 kilometer mission under the Arctic or Antarctic sea-ice. The challenge will address under-ice navigation, endurance and environmental monitoring. It aims to stimulate the development of a monitoring tool for the Polar regions and expand scientific research capabilities and climate services.

African Youth Commit to DRR [viewed]

UNISDR14 January 2015: African youth leaders are taking action to ensure their communities are better informed and prepared to reduce disaster risks. Seven youth leaders participated in a disaster risk reduction (DRR) educational voyage and training programme aboard the passenger ship of the Japan-based NGO Peace Boat, which sailed from the port of Maputo, Mozambique, to Cape Town, South Africa.

FAO Stresses Genetic Diversity in Coping with Climate Change [viewed]

copingclimatechange19 January 2015: Genetic resources have a critical role to play in feeding the world, especially as climate change advances, according to a book titled 'Coping with Climate Change: The Roles of Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.' The book was released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), led by its Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA).
