UNISDR Asia Partnership Meeting Advances Work on Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

UNISDR20 November 2015: Participants at the 2nd Asia Partnership Meeting of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) have developed a draft regional plan for the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 in Asia. The draft plan will be submitted to the 2016 Asia Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) for further discussion and adoption.

FAO and Partners Launch Upgraded Web Platform to Estimate Carbon Stocks in Trees [viewed]

Majority of Disasters are Weather-related: UNISDR Reports [viewed]

UNISDR23 November 2015: The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has released a report, titled 'The Human Cost of Weather-Related Disasters 1995-2015,' which finds that 90% of disasters around the world are caused by weather extremes, such as floods, storms heatwaves or droughts. Over the past 20 years, these disasters have caused 606,000 deaths and left 4.1 billion people injured, homeless or in need of emergency assistance.

Event: COP 21 NAMA Fair [viewed]

Organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat, the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) Fair will present examples of NAMAs that support low-emissions development and inspire further transformational action on the ground in developing countries. The Fair will provide a platform for mutual learning and exchange of experiences, as well as an opportunity meet with public and private international organizations actively engaged in supporting low-emissions development in developing countries. The Fair is organized in partnership with various organizations, including the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

UN High-Level Events Address Water, Sanitation and DRR; UNSGAB Launches Concluding Report [viewed]

The Session convened as part of a series of coordinated events for the UN High-Level Water and Sanitation Days 2015, which included World Toilet Day and culminated with the final meeting of the UN Secretary-General's Special Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB).

El Niño Conference Calls for Preparedness Action Based on Improved Forecasts [viewed]

WorldRisk Report 2015: Food Insecurity Increases Disaster Risk [viewed]

The UN University (UNU) has launched a report addressing the consequences of extreme natural events in 171 countries, and the connection between food security and disaster risk. Upon the report's launch, Peter Mucke, Managing Director of the WorldRiskReport 2015, said crises and disasters cause hunger, the “catastrophic effects of natural hazards” can be decreased by ensuring that people are fed, and hungry people are more vulnerable to disasters, wars and conflicts.

WHO Calls for Strong Climate Agreement to Protect Health [viewed]

WHO17 November 2015: The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a statement urging countries to consider the impacts of climate change on human health during the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, in order to reduce climate-related deaths and protect future generations' health. WHO has also released a first set of climate change and health country profiles to support negotiators in considering health issues during COP 21.

Arab Countries Agree on Roadmap to Implement Sendai Framework [viewed]

unisdr_arab13 November 2015: The Arab region agreed on a roadmap for implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 in order to reduce disaster losses, and which is intended to revitalize the disaster risk coordination mechanism established in 2007 by the League of Arab States. More than 120 participants representing governments, cities, academia, civil society, youth and international organizations met in Cairo, Egypt, to launch an Arab Strategy for DRR specific to the region's needs and priorities and aligned with the Sendai Framework's targets.
