WHO Predicts Increased Global Health Impacts Due to El Niño [viewed]

WHO22 January 2016: Severe drought, flooding, heavy rains and temperature rises are all known El Niño effects that can lead to food insecurity and malnutrition, disease outbreaks, water shortages and disruption of health services, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO). The report indicates that the current 2015-2016 El Niño is predicted to be the worst in recent years and comparable to the 1997-1998 El Niño, which had major health consequences. WHO warns that the health implications of the 2015-2016 El Niño are expected to be more intense in developing countries, which have less capacity to reduce such impacts.

Event: UNDP 50th Anniversary Ministerial Meeting [viewed]

An event to mark the 50th anniversary of the UN Development Programme's (UNDP) founding will bring together ministers from around the world and UN partners to discuss how to translate the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into concrete actions and results. The event will include plenary and thematic sessions on: eradicating poverty and leaving no one behind; protecting the planet and sustainable development; ending violence and building peace; and managing risk and building resilience to climate change. Participating ministers will share their vision for how UNDP can contribute to countries' efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event is expected to identify key roles for UNDP to assist countries in implementation and monitoring. UNDP will use the meeting recommendations to guide its future work.

WMO, NOAA: 2015 the Warmest on Record by the Widest Margin [viewed]

wmo-noaa25 January 2016: According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the global average temperature over land and ocean for 2015 was the highest since record keeping began. The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for December was the highest for any month recorded, and 2011-2015 was the warmest five-year period on record.

WEF: 2016 Year of Implementation on Climate Change, SDGs [viewed]

UNEP, IDB Cooperate to Support SDGs and Paris Agreement [viewed]

unep_idb20 January 2016: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) have announced that they will cooperate on environmental conservation in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. The IDB is set to increase its financial support to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to more than US$150 billion over the coming years.

UNEP, GEF Support Air Monitoring in Bosnia Herzegovina [viewed]

GEF UNEP19 January 2016: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has opened two air monitoring stations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and refurbished two existing ones. These steps will assist the country in: monitoring climate and air quality in line with national and EU law and prevent illnesses and deaths from outdoor pollution; ensuring accurate data is available to monitor climate change; alerting the public about pollution risk; and measuring the impact of policy measures to improve air quality.

Event: Sea-level Observation Symposium: Journées REFMAR 2016 [viewed]

This symposium on sea-level observation is aimed at those in the Francophone community interested in sea-level observation, including tide gauge network operators, researchers and scientists. The event, which will be in French, is being organized by the French Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the framework of the Global Sea Level Observing System activities.
