Event: 117th Meeting of the International Maritime Organization Council [viewed]

The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is elected by the IMO Assembly for two-year terms beginning after each regular Assembly session. The Council is the Executive Organ of IMO and is responsible for supervising the IMO's work. Between sessions of the Assembly, the Council performs all the functions of the Assembly, except the function of making recommendations to Governments on maritime safety and pollution prevention. The Council also: coordinates the activities of the IMO's organs; considers the draft work programme and budget estimates of the IMO and submits them to the Assembly; receives reports and proposals of the Committees and other organs and submits, with comments and recommendations; appoints the IMO Secretary-General, subject to the Assembly's approval; and enters into agreements or arrangements concerning the relationship of the IMO with other organizations.

ICAO, IMO Report to SBSTA on Aviation and Maritime Fuel Emissions [viewed]

ICAO-IMO24 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has issued a document (FCCC/SBSTA/2015/MISC.5) containing the submissions of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). ICAO and IMO submitted the reports, which focus on emissions from fuel used for international aviation and maritime transport, at the request of SBSTA at its 42nd session (SBSTA 42).

IMO MEPC 68 Adopts Environmental Provisions of Polar Code [viewed]

IMO15 May 2015: The 68th Session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted the environmental part of the Polar Code, which is the international code of safety for ships operating in waters surrounding the Earth's poles. MEPC also adopted the relevant amendments under the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) to make the Code mandatory.

ICAO, IMO Report to SBSTA on Emissions from International Aviation and Maritime Transport [viewed]

UNFCCC25 November 2014: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have submitted reports to the UNFCCC Secretariat that contain information on emissions from fuel used for international aviation and maritime transport. The submission (FCCC/SBSTA/2014/MISC.9) comes in response to the invitation by the 40th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 40).

SPREP, IMO Workshop Focuses on Emissions from Shipping [viewed]

sprep-imo-amsa21 November 2014: A regional workshop on regulations relating to the prevention of air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping sought to encourage more Pacific island countries to ratify Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). Currently eight Pacific countries are parties to MARPOL, according to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee Approves Polar Code Provisions [viewed]

IMO20 October 2014: The 67th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved provisions of the draft International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code), and adopted draft amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). The meeting also adopted resolutions supporting the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004 (BWM Convention), and considered a greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions study, energy efficiency in ships, and issues relating to fuel consumption and quality.
